💳 Government asks private firms to stop using IC numbers to prove person's identity

Organisations in the private sector should stop using NRIC numbers to authenticate individuals or passwords, said the Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) on Thursday (May 26), citing risks such as impersonation and data breaches.

While NRIC numbers can be used to identify a person over the phone or when using digital services, it should not be used to prove that a person is who he claims to be.

This means that organisations using full or partial NRIC numbers for authentication or granting access to a services or information should move away from this practice as soon as possible. One example would be insurance companies which uses full or part of NRIC numbers as passwords to encrypt documents.
