Biggest UK fall in real wages for 100 years looms, warns TUC

Study shows pay rises could fall behind inflation by 8% later this year, an unprecedented drop in living standards

Pay rises could fall behind inflation by almost 8% later this year, marking the biggest fall in real wages for 100 years, according to analysis by the TUC.

The TUC said a prediction by the Bank of England that inflation would jump to 13% in the fourth quarter of this year at a time when wages were expected to increase by just 5.25% meant living standards would fall by an unprecedented 7.75%.

The figure was calculated by looking at the impact of inflation on workers’ living standards using the latest Bank forecasts. The TUC said that workers had not suffered such a severe and prolonged decline in wages relative to inflation since the 1920s.

Inflation continues to rise, whilst wages and conditions worsen. As a result, more and more sections of the working class are growing restless, and are demanding better pay to combat the cost-of-living catastrophe, as seen with the recent strikes by unions such as the CWU and the RMT.

Significantly in recent weeks, however, fresh layers of the working class are now joining the struggle unofficially, through wildcat strikes.

These are an indication that Britain is on the brink of an almighty explosion in the class struggle.

Plea for Liz Truss to act after Saudis jail UK student for 34 years over Twitter use

Britain has a duty to speak out over Salma al-Shehab, who tweeted on women’s rights, foreign secretary told

The foreign secretary, Liz Truss, has been urged to intervene in the “outrageous” case of a Leeds University student jailed in Saudi Arabia for 34 years over her use of Twitter.

Hilary Benn, Labour MP for Leeds Central, said the UK had a “duty” to press for the release of Salma al-Shehab, a Saudi national who had been living in Britain and was detained after returning to visit family last year.

Shehab, who has two young children, was initially jailed for three years for “causing public unrest” and “destabilising civil and national security” after appearing to support activists and dissidents on Twitter.

LONDON — We will know on Monday, when the Conservative Party’s vote count is announced, but all the opinion polls say the next prime minister of Britain will be Liz Truss, whose political journey began on the left — down with the monarchy! she cried — only to arrive on the right, as a hard-line Brexiteer who has tried to channel the Iron Lady herself, Margaret Thatcher.

Truss has held six ministerial posts under three prime ministers, including 11 months as foreign minister. Yet after her years of public service and a summer making her pitch to Conservative Party activists, many Britons confess they don’t really know Truss. Not the way they knew Boris Johnson — former London mayor, newspaper columnist, colorful orator, serial prevaricator — when he took office just a few years ago.

It’s fair to say Truss is a shapeshifter. She fought for Britain to remain in the European Union before becoming a staunch defender of Brexit. Her supporters say she accepted the outcome of the 2016 referendum and got with the program. Others say she’s a weather vane, pivoting when it suits her advancement.

Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak to be announced as UK's next PM...

The winner of the leadership contest will be announced at 12:30 BST, before then taking office on Tuesday after formal appointment by the Queen.

The new PM will inherit a flagging economy, with inflation at a 40-year high.

They are also under pressure to cushion the blow of soaring energy costs.
