While Singapore cannot depart totally from wooing multinationals to our shores, we must face the reality that our high costs makes us a less inviting option for many foreign firms. MNCs are leaving the Philippines for different reasons with the same results. There needs to be a viable alternative – with local companies at its core - to give us a competitive advantage in the global market.

I guess most Sinkies are put off by the huge costs involved in rental, labour and the small market within SG.

Once you get in, it is hard to get out unless you cover your eyes and walk out. It will be a loss.

I remember when Medical Tourism used to be the economic growth generator envisaged by the govt till our greedy docs and private hospitals priced themselves out of the regional market.

The S'pore Medical Association  fee guidelines are like speed limits on our expressways. Some drivers will automatically travel below the limit. A few have a tendency to go well above the limit. The majority will drive near the speed limit, but exceed it without a care once this limit is abolished. Unfortunately, those who already tend to speed will test the limits of how fast they can travel once speeding is no longer unlawful. The SMA fee guidelines were removed at one time as they were seen to be anti-competition in nature. This heralded runaway fees charged by specialists in private practice during the time when Medical Tourism was taking off in S'pore. This initiative died a natural death as a result.
