Into the void. Houthis, only active members of Iran’s “Axis of Resistance” still engaging in direct hostilities against Israel, the rebel has escalated high-powered long-range missile attacks to match the intensity & breadth, not the frequency, of the threat formerly posed by their fellow Iran-backed proxies.Historically, Houthis drawn inspiration from Hezbollah terror group in Lebanon, once considered the strongest of Iran’s proxies with the tightest ties to Tehran. Behind the attacks stand a terror group known as the Houthis, despite being located some 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) away, have managed to harass Jewish state from afar, & chokehold on global commerce, proving stubbornly resistant to Western attempts to put them down. With Hamas’s capabilities severely degraded, Hezbollah cowed into a ceasefire, Syria’s regime deposed & Iraqi militias reportedly deciding to cease attacks, in early Dec Israel finally be free of wailing air raid sirens, thudding interceptions & deadly impacts that had become a constant torment since October 7, 2023.

Now their objective has always been to be the next Hezbollah,” said Mike Knights, a senior fellow at Washington Institute for Near East Policy & a veteran expert of Iran-backed militias. Related: IDF says it downed Yemen.

Houthis Attack Giant Power Station In Haifa, Mock Israel's Defence Systems

The Houthis have intensified their attacks on Israel, expanding their offensive after targeting Tel Aviv and Talmei Elazar. In the latest strike, Yemen’s Ansar Allah fighters, also known as the Houthis, claimed success in hitting Haifa, specifically targeting the Orot Rabin Power Station south of the city. On January 5, they fired a ballistic missile at northern Israel, claiming it accurately hit its target. The Houthis also asserted that the missile bypassed Israel’s defence systems, mocking Israel's interception capabilities. This marks the second "successful operation" claimed by the Houthis on the first Sunday of 2025.

Israel identifies body of hostage recovered from Gaza, days after father’s remains were found
By Eugenia Yosef, Abeer Salman, Eugenia Yosef and Becky Anderson, Updated Fri Jan 10, 2025

CNN news:
Israeli military said Friday it identified body of a hostage recovered from a tunnel southern Gaza as son of Yosef Al-Ziyadnah, a hostage whose body was recovered earlier this week. Hamza Al-Ziyadnah, 23, was found dead in tunnel in Rafah area, a joint statement from Israel Defense Forces Internal Security Agency, known as Shin Bet, said on Friday.

The Israeli military said Wednesday it had recovered the body of Yousef Al-Ziyadnah, 53, from a tunnel in the Rafah area and had discovered evidence that raised “grave concerns” for his son’s life. Hamza and his father were kidnapped during the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023 and had been held in the Gaza Strip. “Hamza and Yosef were abducted alive on October 7 and were killed while in Hamas captivity,” the statement said.

The Al-Ziyadnah family are part of the Bedouin Muslim-Arab community that lives in southern Israel’s Negev desert. Yousef and three of his children – Hamza, Bilal, and Aysha – were taken from Kibbutz Holit in southwest Israel, where they used to work. Bilal and Aysha were among the dozens of hostages returned in the short-lived ceasefire deal in November 2023.

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum expressed grief at the news of Hamza’s death and again called for a deal to release the remaining hostages held in Gaza. “Yosef and Hamza, who survived a period in the hell of Gaza captivity, could have been saved through an earlier agreement,” the statement said.

“The time and conditions are ripe for all the hostages to return – bringing the living home for rehabilitation and the deceased for proper burial,” it said. “The negotiations must be expedited to secure an immediate deal for their return. This historic window of opportunity stands before us and must not be lost.”

US President-elect Donald Trump doesn’t like being asked what he means when he threatens “all hell to pay” if the hostages aren’t released by his January 20 inauguration. Twice this past week he was pressed to elaborate, sparking angry reactions of “I don’t think I have to go into it anymore” and “Do I have to define it for you?”

When The Times of Israel subsequently asked two of Trump’s aides to explain what is meant by the threat, they also declined to do so. This's same Trump who during his first term promised “fire & fury like the world has never seen” if North Korea threatening US, only to later build a warm relationship with Kim Jong Un, even as the latter continued to threaten Washington.

No!. No!., but for Trump, he also ordered strike that took out head of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp’s elite Quds Force. Qassem Soleimani in 2020, demonstrating he isn’t afraid to take unprecedented military action against Tehran-led axis of resistance against Israel.

This lack of clarity regarding Trump’s threat maybe meant to preserve maximum maneuverability and element of surprise, has also somewhat blunted the effectiveness of his message.“Trump tries to use his unpredictability as an asset.” Said a senior Arab diplomat for one of the countries mediating this hostage talks between Israel & Hamas. “Sometimes there’s something behind his threats, & sometimes there isn’t. The problem is, we don’t know which is the case this time.”... Rotfl

The vagueness of Trump’s comments also leaves open the possibility that he does not intend the US to be the one making good on the “all hell to pay” threat. Enter Israel. Once January 20 rolls around, Israel is planning to ramp up various forms of pressure on Hamas in Gaza to get a deal over the finish line, unencumbered by demands of outgoing US President Joe Biden’s admin threat of cuts to security assistance over humanitarian crisis in the Strip, an Israeli official told The Times of Israel.

Official said PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has weighed significantly restricting amount of humanitarian aid entering Gaza if there is no hostage deal by the inauguration. Israel is also planning to ramp up the IDF’s ongoing ground offensive in Gaza, expanding op that has largely targeted northernmost quarter of the Strip toward central Gaza, Israeli said the goal is to rob Hamas of another area where it still has some control.

The result of these two actions could well create “hell” for Hamas. Trump has referred to, the Israeli official said. But as CIA Director William Burns pointed out on Friday, people in Gaza — including Palestinian civilians & Israeli hostages — are already living in “hellish” conditions. Aid levels in Gaza periodically become alarmingly low, with October seeing least amount entering
territory in 2024, despite repeated US prodding.
