“Over the years, we have seen a shift from India being pro-Palestine to more pro-Israel today,” Suhasini Haidar, the diplomatic-affairs editor of The Hindu newspaper,

Since the Hamas attacks a year ago, Hindu nationalists across India have held rallies in support of Israel, while in states governed by the Hindu right, pro-Palestine demonstrators have been arrested.

The pattern is a striking anomaly for a country historically sympathetic to the Arab nation’s cause. In the Hindu-nationalist imagination, Israel and India occupy parallel positions—surrounded by Muslim enemies within and without

“Israel knows that the Hindu right glorified Hitler,” Haidar told me. “Both sides try to ignore that.”
Hindu nationalists have sought to use the October 7 attack on Israel to further their own domestic ideological ends

The Hindu nationalists movement’s identification with Israel is, in many ways, perverse. Hindu nationalism took root in the 1920s, inspired by the rise of European fascism.

NEW DELHI: India’s ruling party has removed the Taj Mahal from an official tourism advert, in what historians say is an attempt to undermine the country’s Islamic heritage and further sideline its Muslim minority. The removal of the 17th-century Mughal mausoleum — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — follows the recent erasure of Muslim city and town names in the country.

This is not a new phenomenon. Descendants of the British colonists in India ( referred to as Anglo-Indians ) still believe that they are British and swear allegiance to the UK. There are also many Indians in S'pore and Malaysia who claim to be Eurasians. The Jewish community in India has an affinity to Israel because of their shared religion.

British actor Alistair McGowan's Calcutta-born father concealed his Indian nationality until his death, telling his son he was darker-skinned after summers spent working in greenhouses. The same paranoia afflicted Anglo-Indian Hollywood actress Merle Oberon (below), who denied her ancestry.
