The anticipated renewed attack on Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region has reinvigorated the response of Nato allies, prompting them, for the first time, to send heavy weaponry to bolster Kyiv’s resistance against the Kremlin’s offensive.

The first flight containing arms from the United States’ latest £612 million offer of arms is expected to arrive in the region as early as Saturday. The shipment will include Western-made Howitzer artillery and thousands of shells.

After numerous Russian failings in Ukraine, Washington and its international partners see the shift to the Donbas as an opportunity to further tip the war in Kyiv’s favour, according to analysts.

Thwarted in its plans to capture the Ukrainian capital, security officials believe the Kremlin has shifted its focus to the Donbas in order to claim a sufficient military victory ahead of May 9, the day Russia traditionally celebrates the end of the Second World War.
