Umno president and former deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s acquittal without even his defence being called on 40 corruption charges came as a shock and appears to indicate that the prosecution case was weak.

Is it indeed the situation? Would the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) dare to have prosecuted a former deputy prime minister and home minister for serious offences without having sufficient grounds?

Was the case that was made out so far so weak that the presiding judge had to rule that there was no prima facie evidence to warrant a trial? If it was so weak, why would the AGC even bother prosecuting the case?

Briefly, Zahid was acquitted of all graft charges in relation to the Foreign Visa System (VLN). Shah Alam High Court judge Mohd Yazid Mustafa ruled last week that the prosecution had failed to prove a prima facie case and its three key witnesses were unreliable...

While Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob called for an early election yesterday to win a stronger mandate... Rotfl

Umno Chief. Zahid was referring to the statement made by Dr M during an interview with a news agency, in which, the Langkawi member of parliament had claimed that most voters from the Malay community had been enticed to return to Umno due to incentives that included money.

"Dr Mahathir should realise that majority of the Malays had returned to supporting Umno as they were aware of the mistake that some of them made during the 14th General Election

Zahid claimed the Malays had witnessed the damage to the economy of the country as well as the unity among the people of the country following the mistake they had made in GE14.

"The Malays have realised the importance of having a (federal) government that is not only capable but also has experience, and is strong and stable in order for the country to prosper.

"Therefore, stop accusing Malay voters who have returned their support for Umno because of money just because the majority of them no longer trust Pejuang (Parti Pejuang).

Its typical of Dr M to blame others, says activist.

Malaysia's Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul unveiled a RM371.6 billion (S$114.3 billion) budget on Friday.

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's biggest federal budget could double up as an election manifesto for the longest-ruling party Umno, as it aims to retain federal power outright after a shock defeat in the 2018 general election.

Analysts said that the RM371.6 billion (S$114.3 billion) budget unveiled on Friday, if passed by Parliament, could be used by the ruling party to appease lower-income groups that form a major bulk of the electorate.

Najib Razak is among the potential candidates named by Pekan Umno for the Pekan parliamentary seat, while his son Nizar has been nominated for a state seat.

PETALING JAYA: The Pekan Umno division will stick to naming the jailed Najib Razak as a potential candidate for the next general election (GE15), said the division’s deputy head, Zamri Ramly.

Oct 10, PM Ismail announced the dissolution of Parliament to trigger the general election. He and his Cabinet remain in charge in a caretaker capacity until a new government is formed.

Former law minister. Zaid said the solution was not to postpone the elections but to have it quickly.

“The rakyat are tired of waiting. The complaint since the Sheraton Move in February 2020 has been that the country is run by an illegitimate government.

“Holding the elections quickly will ensure that a legitimate government takes power,” he said.

Malaysians will likely head to the polls in November, following the dissolution of Parliament on Monday.

The exact date will be set by the Election Commission, which is scheduled to meet next Thursday (Oct 20) to decide the matter.

Malaysia's King, Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah, has urged the commission to hold polls as soon as possible, given that the annual monsoon rains that cause widespread flooding usually begin in mid-November and continue until March.

Malaysia to go to the polls on Nov 19

Nomination day will be on Nov 5, while early voting will take place on Nov 15.

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia will hold its 15th General Election (GE15) on Nov 19, said the Election Commission (EC) on Thursday (Oct 20).

Nomination Day will be on Nov 5, while early voting is set to be held on Nov 15, said EC chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh.

"The campaigning period has been set for 14 days, from the date of nomination to 11.59pm on Nov 18," he said during a press conference.

He added that a by-election for the Bugaya state seat in Sabah will also be held during the same period.

Mr Abdul Ghani also said that the elections are expected to cost RM1.01 billion (US$213 million). More than 21 million people will be eligible to cast their votes during the elections.

Applications for overseas postal voters will close on Oct 23, he said.

On Oct 10, caretaker prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that parliament has been dissolved, paving the way for national elections to be held before the end of the year.

The states of Perak, Perlis and Pahang have also dissolved their legislatures and state polls will be held concurrently with the national elections.

Six other states – three under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition and the other three led by Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) – decided not to dissolve their assemblies for now.

The three states under PH are Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Penang while the states under PAS rule are Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah.

PAS is a member of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition together with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), among others.

State assemblies of Sabah, Sarawak, Johor and Melaka are out of the equation as polls were held recently.

Khairy said the hotline began operations today.

I (he) is almost certain that I will be sent to an area held by opposition and it is most likely one that is not considered safe seat,” he told reporters after an event at the Universiti Teknologi Mara campus.

Khairy, who is a three-term Rembau MP, is giving way to Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan to contest the seat in GE15.

A news report had speculated that Umno may field Khairy Jamaluddin in Kuala Pilah.

According to Sinar Harian, an Umno source said that Khairy needed a "safe seat” that would ensure his victory because he was considered an asset to the party.

Mahathir, 97, to contest election to 'save country from Umno rule'

Mahathir’s decision to defend his parliamentary seat marks his 11th foray into a general election. He lost only once before, more than half a century ago in 1969, by a margin of less than 1,000 votes.

Mahathir’s latest creation, and is an amalgamation of his pro-Malay rights party Pejuang, fellow Malay nationalist party Putra and several Malay organisations.

Dr M alliance will contest at least 120 of the 222 seats up for grabs in the election, Mahathir said, with the aim of presenting a third alternative to the corruption-tainted Umno, a traditional bastion for the majority Malay-Muslim voters, and the urban-centric PH.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob is likely to retain his position after the Nov 19 general election. Ismail, who was in office for 14 months until he called for snap elections, was the number one choice for 19% of respondents in a survey by research-based firm Ilham Centre.

Ismail’s party, Umno, also came out on top in the survey at 31.8%. While the results are a boost for Ismail and Umno as they prepare for GE15, gone are the days when political parties and leaders would get more than 50% of the support.

GE15 is not due until September 2023, but Umno wanted it early to capitalise on recent local election victories as well as what they saw as an opposition in disarray. Even so, Umno is unlikely to get a strong parliamentary majority.

Close on Ismail’s heels in the survey was former PM Najib Razak, who remains popular Najib was tied in third place with Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) prime minister candidate Anwar Ibrahim. Muhyiddin of the Perikatan Nasional coalition, came in second with 13% in the survey.

Voter turnout could play into Umno’s favour this time. About 83% of respondents said they would vote come polling day, but a breakdown of the data showed that those most unsure about whether they would vote were the Chinese and non-Muslim Bumiputeras – PH’s typical vote bank.
