SHAH ALAM: A key witness told the Shah Alam High Court on Monday (Jul 25) that former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad had received a political donation of RM2.6 million (US$580,000) from Ultra Kirana Sdn Bhd (UKSB).

UKSB is a local company implicated in the ongoing corruption trial of former deputy prime minister and United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Ahmad Zahid is facing 33 charges of receiving bribes totalling RM42 million from UKSB as an inducement to extend the company's contract as the operator of the One Stop Centre (OSC) service in China and the foreign visa system (VLN) for the Home Ministry.

According to Bernama, former UKSB administrative manager David Tan Siong Sun said the firm gave RM2.6 million to Dr Mahathir for political funding purposes.

Mr Tan said during cross-examination by defence lawyer Ahmad Zaidi Zainal that the funds were paid through Dr Mahathir’s nephew Rahmat Abu Bakar, with the code "Kedahan" used as reference in the ledger.

When asked by the defence lawyer on whether the RM2.6 million was given to Mr Rahmat to be given to Dr Mahathir for political funds, Tan replied: “That’s correct.”

He said the contributions were for Dr Mahathir as well as Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), which Dr Mahathir co-founded in 2016 after leaving UMNO.

UKSB: Dr M's nephew has opened can of worms - Umno man

Revelations by former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad's nephew over his past role in Ultra Kirana Sdn Bhd (UKSB) have raised more questions on possible impropriety.

In a statement today, Umno supreme council member Razlan Rafii said Rahmat Abu Bakar's admission that he once had a RM1.3 million salary from UKSB aroused suspicion.

‘Umno 3.0’ waiting to take over from Zahid and Najib, says insider. PETALING JAYA: Speculation is rife that plans are being put in place to get Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and his predecessor, Najib Razak, out of the picture by August and to woo others under a new party leadership called Umno 3.0. “Umno 3.0 will have a new leader and will work with PPBM and PAS,” a source close to the talks said, adding that calls for Zahid to step down are expected to get louder in the coming days, especially from Umno ministers.

Umno was known as Umno 2.0 after a split in the party in 1987.

The source said there are some party leaders “stubbornly loyal” to Zahid but “once the two (Zahid and Najib) can be removed, a new Umno can emerge stronger”.

He said Umno 3.0 will back Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister after the next general election (GE15) and will go all-out to win rural “true-blue” support as the biggest Malay party in the country.

However, another Umno insider aligned to Zahid’s camp said those supporting Umno 3.0 may also try to get rid of party deputy president Mohamad Hasan as he may be the next in line if Zahid is no longer president.

That’s what happens in a mature democracy and where people have respect for the office. It’s a different scenario in Malaysia: we have a free-for-all, and it’s such an embarrassing affair. I will not name the individuals, the facts speak for themselves.

There are four living ex-PMs in Malaysia. Mr Nice Guy, I understand is not very well; health wise, I wish him a happy and healthy life. He has been ideal, quiet, doesn’t interfere, lets the new leader run the show according to the wishes of the people. If the people are not happy, they will speak out, through the opposition or on social media.

The other three ex-PMs are a different case. The worst part is they all elected or chose each other, and came from the same political party at one point. The elder one brought them into power, and appointed them into positions.

He is currently in his final appealing process at the Federal Court this week after the Court of Appeal upheld the High Court’s verdict in December 2021.

Federal Court’s hearing will run until August 26, and if the Federal Court upholds his convictions, he will have to serve his sentence before he can start applying for judicial review or royal pardon from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
