Chinese president left Moscow on Wednesday, having made no direct support for the Russian president’s war in Ukraine during his three-day visit.

Mr Xi made a strong show of solidarity with Putin against the West, telling Mr Putin as he departed: “Now there are changes that haven’t happened in 100 years. When we are together, we drive these changes.”

Finland’s president, Sauli Niinistö, signed legislation to make his country part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato).

Last year, Finland sought to join the military alliance in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine, and legislation incorporating Nato’s founding treaties was passed in parliament in Helsinki on 1 March.

Operating new battalions of Leopard 2s and smaller numbers of Abrams and Challenger 2 tanks will test Western allies’ commitment and ability to keep the parts and ammo flowing. And they will test Ukraine’s warfighters and mechanics’ ability to learn quickly and integrate so many different systems into a coherent fighting force.

The happiness from the fact that they’re giving us tanks is a little bit eclipsed by the great difficulties of maintaining them in fighting shape

Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant: The former director of the facility provided a harrowing account of abuse of Ukrainian workers and careless practices by the Russians who took control of the plant.

Refusing to Leave Home: In the battered town of Avdiivka, as in Bakhmut and other devastated places on the front lines in Ukraine, most residents left long ago, but there are holdouts.

Restoring a Giant Plane: Ukraine plans to rebuild the colossal Mriya cargo plane, a symbol of pride that was destroyed in the first days of the war. But critics say there are far more pressing need.

Moscow is presenting the campaign as a drive for volunteer, professional personnel, rather than a new, mandatory mobilisation.

“There is a realistic possibility that in practice this distinction will be blurred, and that regional authorities will try to meet their allocated recruitment targets by coercing men to join up,” the MoD said.

This comes as Russian forces have witnessed some success in Bakhmut over the past day after being stalled around the Donetsk city for weeks in a slow-burning fight, officials from the Ukrainian side have said.

For four straight weeks of this month, the average number of daily Russian attacks on the front line reported by Ukraine‘s general staff has declined.

Vitalii Barabash, Head of the Avdiivka City Military Administration, said that the city's infrastructure had been "completely ruined", adding that, "it is impossible to restore or repair, but only to demolish and rebuild".

He told Interfax-Ukraine: "There is not a single house left standing. The city probably hasn't had a single building standing since summer."

In recent weeks, Moscow has switched its focus to Avdiivka in the Donetsk region, hoping to encircle the Ukrainian troops defending it after having so far failed to capture nearby Bakhmut.

It is feared the renewed Russian effort to seize Avdiivka could create a “second Bakhmut.

In the south of Ukraine, Air Force units and missile and artillery units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine hit two enemy manpower and hardware clusters and decimated 17 Russian soldiers.
"Aviation and missile and artillery units continue performing fire missions on the left-bank areas. Two enemy manpower and hardware clusters were struck. Seventeen occupiers, 10 units of weapons and equipment, including an electronic warfare station, an anti-drone gun, an UAV ground control point, two mortars, two recon UAVs, one tank, and two armored combat vehicles, were demilitarized," the Operational Command "South" posted on Facebook.

An ammunition depot of the Russian air defense units, a field supply point, and an observation point were also destroyed.

The enemy is maneuvering, trying to disperse its forces and means to avoid critical damage. "Logistics are complicated, and the morale is extremely poor," the Operational Command "South" noted.
