I am recommending this series about espionage and counter-espionage. It is 风起陇西 (The Wind Blows From Longxi).
It is rather refreshing because it is not set in the cold war era between USA and USSR. Nor is it set during the Chinese civil war between CCP and KMT. It is also not set during WW2 nor WW1. It depicts spies more than 1700 years ago during the Three Kingdoms era.
Plot is good. As usual, in anything regarding the Three Kingdoms period, the characters are mainly up to par in terms of intelligence. The costumes are good too as they are mainly in earth or grey tones as a lot of dyes are not invented yet.
The story starts when the Prime Minister of 蜀 (Shu), 诸葛亮 (Zhuge Liang; courtesy name: 孔明 (Kongming)) led Shu forces to invade 魏 (Wei) for the very first time (the first of 六出祁山 (The Five Northern Expeditions of Zhuge Liang; actually only 5 as one of the wars was initiated by Wei and only two started from 祁山)).
A message by the Shu spy codenamed 白帝 (Baidi) in 天水 (Tianshui) was sent to Zhuge Liang to inform him that Wei's general, 张郃 (Zhang He; courtesy name: 儁乂 (Junyi)) will attack from 瓦亭道 (Wa Ting Dao) instead of the expected 番须道 (Fan Xu Dao). With this information, Zhuge Liang decides to lead the main forces to combat Zhang He at Wa Ting Dao. But Fan Xu Dao will still need to be defended. He sent 马谡 (Ma Su; courtesy name: 幼常 (Youchang)) to defend Fan Xu Dao at 街亭 (Jieting).
But the message was fake. Zhang He attacked from Fan Xu Dao and Ma Shu was defeated and lost Jie Ting which resulted in the famous episode of 挥泪斩马谡.
With the loss, Zhuge Liang's political foe back in the Shu capital, 成都 (Chengdu), 李严 (Li Yan; courtesy name: 正方 (Zhengfang)) started to attack Zhuge Liang and the Shu's spy agency is under pressure to investigate and close the case of the fake message.
The head of Shu's spy agency, 冯膺 (Feng Ying) sent his subordinate and head of counter-espionage, 荀诩 (Xun Xu) to Tianshui to investigate and kill Baidi as Baidi has to die for political reasons.
Meanwhile, Baidi realised that his message has been intercepted and altered which led to Shu's loss. The Wei authorities in Tianshui are also investigating who is the famous Shu spy Baidi and are trying to find and arrest him. Baidi needs to avoid being exposed and arrested by the Wei investigators and also prevent himself from being killed by Xun Xu. He also has to investigate who is the mole in Shu who has intercepted his message and altered it.
And hence starts the espionage and counter-espionage battle of wits.
