Russia on Monday (20 June) demanded that Lithuania immediately lift a ban on the transit of some goods to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

Lithuanian authorities banned the transit of goods which are sanctioned by the European Union across its territory, which includes the only rail route between mainland Russia and the Kaliningrad exclave on the Baltic Sea.

In 1990 just before the Soviet Union imploded, Lithuania seceeded from the Union and later on signed an internationally-recognised treaty with Russia to agree to allow the free flow of Russian rail shipments to Kaliningrad in exchange for Russia agreeing to set its borders with Lithuania

Now that Lithuania has thrown that treaty down the rubbish chute, Russia is no longer treaty-bound to recognise the border. But unlike the Donbass where the majority are Russian speakers, Russia does not regard Lithuania part of historic Russian land and has other options to respond to the Lithuanian provocation.
