SINGAPORE: Four public housing estates will be designated as "car-lite" from Oct 31, with parking spaces reduced to make way for more public facilities and greenery, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said in a joint press release on Wednesday (Oct 5).

The estates - Ulu Pandan, Mount Pleasant, Tengah and the Keppel Club site, which is part of the Greater Southern Waterfront - will be "planned upfront with good public transport, walking and cycling connections", the authorities said.

With limited parking provision, lots will be prioritised for residents in these precincts.

Two other areas - Tanjong Rhu and Pearl’s Hill - will also be gazetted by LTA as car-lite, while Bayshore's existing car-lite area will be expanded.

The govt gutless incremental car lite policy leaves much to be desired.

1. Why are car parks subsidised by HDB? Given minority of residents are car owners who pollute the environment. Is it fair for all tax payers to pay for parking of minority to keep it cheap??!

2. Why are some families allowed to have 2 cars...and families with disabled and elderly on wheel chair not given priority?

Implement COE factoring:

1. Families buying 2nd car pay 2XCOE successful bid.

2. Families with disabled child pay 0.5XCOE.

3. Families with caring for elderly parents pay 0.75XCOE.

The govt should be more serious about car lite.

They're slowly taking away things to let you get used to it. Just like they're making flats smaller and smaller. Next time 3-room will be norm.
