As Trump vows to end war, Ukraine’s deep strikes weaken Russia. Ukraine is striking Russian oil refineries and war production with increasing success. As US President Donald Trump launched a 100-day effort to end the war in Ukraine, Kyiv’s long-range weapons were devastating the heart of Russia’s war effort – its oil depots, weapons storages and factories.

Trump took the oath of office on Monday, saying success would be measured “not just by the battles that we win, but also by the wars that we end and perhaps most importantly, the wars we never get into”. That was a reference to his oft-stated belief that the administration of his predecessor, former US President Joe Biden, erred in allowing the Ukraine war to begin, and his vow to end it quickly.

President Volodymyr Zelensky on Jan. 22 clarified his earlier comments on the number of European peacekeepers needed to maintain peace in Ukraine, saying the required numbers would depend on the size of Ukraine’s own military.

The statement comes after Zelensky told a journalist at the World Economic Forum in Davos that at least 200,000 European soldiers would be needed for a stable peace deal.

"By the way, I didn’t say we need 200,000 (peacekeepers)... A journalist asked me, I said, 'maybe more, maybe less,'" Zelensky said when asked about the statement in an interview with Bloomberg TV.

Zelensky spoke in comparably stronger terms in Davos, saying: "From all the Europeans? 200,000, it’s a minimum. It’s a minimum, otherwise it’s nothing."

The president explained in the interview that the size of the needed contingent will depend on the strength of the Ukrainian military. As Kyiv would struggle to maintain a million-strong army needed to repel a future Russian aggression, fielding such a force would depend on U.S. and European support, he explained.

If the U.S. and Europe prove unwilling to help maintain such an army and Ukraine reduces it "by 200,000, 300,000 or 500,000, it means that other troops have to replace them in those numbers," Zelensky added.

The president’s conclusion was that in the face of such options, Ukraine’s accession to NATO is the cheapest way toward stable peace both for Ukraine and the West. At the same time, Zelensky admitted that some members – namely the U.S., Germany, Slovakia, and Hungary – remain reluctant to allow Ukraine into the alliance.

Zelensky has been in contact with a number of European leaders about the prospects of a peacekeeping mission — an initiative that French President Emmanuel Macron has spearheaded. During a visit to Kyiv on Jan. 16, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that his country will play its "full part" in supporting efforts to maintain an enduring peace in Ukraine.

The idea has also found support from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has called upon Europe to take up greater responsibility for Ukraine’s security and pledged to bring a swift end to the war.

"I understand that contacts can be in different formats," Zelenskyy said, referring to possible negotiations that would lead to "a just peace".

"I think we should focus on this today," he said.

President Vladimir Putin earlier this week said he was ready for talks with US counterpart Donald Trump on Ukraine, praising him as a "smart" leader who might have prevented the conflict from starting in February 2022.

Putin did not say when talks could take place, and the Kremlin said earlier it was still waiting for "signals" from Washington, despite Trump announcing Thursday he was willing to meet Putin "immediately".

Trump, who was inaugurated on Monday, has called the conflict "ridiculous" and threatened Russia with tougher economic sanctions if it does not agree to stop its offensive.

Soldiers of Ukraine’s 225th Assault Battalion ambushed Russian units in Kursk Oblast using HIMARS, a tactic that may explain significant Russian losses, Forbes analyst David Axe reported on Jan. 23. Axe writes that Ukrainian troops pretended to retreat after a defeat, drawing the Russians into a wooded area near the village of Sverdlikove. Once the Russian forces moved in, they were struck by HIMARS.

“As a result of the strike, a significant portion of enemy personnel was eliminated, and our groups returned to complete the clearance of the area,” the 225th Assault Battalion reported on Jan. 23.
Axe noted that the ambush was made possible by precise coordination between the battalion’s headquarters, forward companies, and an adjacent artillery brigade. This operation highlights the reasons for the heavy losses suffered by Russian and North Korean forces.

Russian and North Korean troops, Axe explained, continue to attack daily along the same routes toward the city of Sudzha, a key Ukrainian defensive position. Increasingly, these forces advance on foot with inadequate support, making them especially vulnerable to artillery strikes, particularly when their movements are funneled into pre-designated kill zones.

The exact number of Russian casualties in this op remains unknown. Large Russian attacks typically involve up to 50 vehicles & several hundred soldiers, though most op use smaller forces. In recent weeks, most disastrous assaults by Russian & North Korean units have resulted in hundreds of dead and wounded. Axe points out pride expressed by 225th Battalion over ambush suggests potentially massive Russian casualties.”
On Jan. 9, 2025, @Ramstein Air Base in Germany, President Zelenskyy stated that North Korean troop losses had already reached 4,000, while Russian losses had climbed to 30,000.

As Ukraine tries to hold onto Donetsk Oblast strongholds, Ukrainian soldiers and Western experts are raising concerns about the cost of last-ditch withdrawals. Thrusting forward with their vast manpower advantage, Of course military situation around Velyka Novosilka. But maybe the Finish Blackbird Group doesn't either. After all - op security is one of the strong suits of the AFU, what if Ukrainian general staff has deliberately lured the Russians to overexpose themselves in the area? What if strategic reserves - of if they do or don't exist can or can't be deployed - are being brought in right now to give Russians a bloody nose in a target rich environment of their own making? It wouldn't be the first time Armed Forces of Ukraine have turned the tables on their enemy. Only time will tell...

Russian troops are gradually penetrating Ukrainian defenses on the western edge of Donetsk Oblast and are close to capturing Velyka Novosilka. Loc: about 15km east of neighboring Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, the vital road-junction village was once home to around 5,000 people. It is now facing a similar fate to other Donbas strongholds, where Ukraine's delayed withdrawals resulted in avoidable casualties, military experts said. They,
Russian troops appear to have cut into center of Velyka Novosilka, likely dividing town into two & trapping Ukrainian troops in south, according to Pasi Paroinen at Finland-based open-source intelligence organization Black Bird Group. Paroinen said on Jan. 25 southern pocket appears to have just fallen, w/Ukrainians likely holding onto Velyka Novosilka’s northwestern areas & Russia expected to complete the capture in “days.”Russian Defense claimed on Jan. 24 its troops had planted a Russian flag in ctr of Velyka Novosilka that they had split town into two, cutting off Ukrainian forces.

It is unclear how many Ukrainian troops were trapped inside the southern pocket in Velyka Novosilka, but it could be around two or three battalions, Paroinen said. He added that, given the dire manpower situation in Ukraine, these battalions were likely depleted, with only a few hundred troops remaining in total. The question is if it's closer to a thousand or closer to a few hundred, & considering how bad manpower situation is, probably going to be closer to several hundred,” Paroinen told the Kyiv Independent, adding that it is “purely a rough estimate” due to the lack of official info.

“Ukraine newer or newly formed brigade did not undergo the necessary combat training,” one relative of a 157th Mechanized Brigade trooper told Hromadske, “but it was immediately sent to the hottest areas” including the besieged fortress city of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine.

Capturing Pokrovsk is one of Russia’s top objectives as its wider war on Ukraine grinds into its fourth year. Defending it is one of Ukraine’s top objectives. Given its importance, it’s shocking to many observers that the Ukrainian army keeps reinforcing the city with dysfunctional units, including the 155th and 157th Mechanized Brigades. Both units began falling apart before they even arrived in Pokrovsk. “The situation in the 157th Mechanized Brigade mirrors that of other brigades in the 150th series,” noted from Militaryland, a collective that tracks Ukrainian military force structure. “Soldiers were taken during the formation process, units hastily deployed to front & sent without proper training, resulting in heavy casualties.”

The 157th Mechanized Brigade is one of the eight 150-series brigades—also including the 151st, 153rd, 154th, 155th, 156th, 158th and 159th Mechanized Brigades—that formed in 2023 or early 2024 and, after a lengthy period of training, began arriving on the front starting late last year.
Brigades are big, some with roughly double the usual 2,000 manpower billets of a Ukrainian ground combat brigade. But they’re also fragile—with inexperienced leaders, too few modern armored vehicles & poor morale that often results in a high desertion rate. crying

Trump’s. Here's Trump’s 90-day freeze on U.S. aid has left independent Ukrainian media without critical funding first week in office, reviewing whether distribution aligned with his foreign policy. Trump: In wealthier economies, newspapers faced a choice: Even then, it’s an uphill battle — while NY Times has turned a profit, the Washington Post has not. For independent media never had opportunity to develop & adapt. Market has merciless & independent outlets have faced stiff competition from oligarch-owned media — lavishly funded but designed to serve their owners’ interests rather than public good & yet Ukraine can't afford to not have independent media. Watchdog journalism is essential for holding those in power accountable. It’s a cornerstone of any democracy.

Zelenskyy outlines Ukraine’s key demands for a peace agreement. He stated that a peace agreement must be more than just formal commitments on paper. Ukraine will insist on real security guarantees.
He made this statement in an interview with Fox News."I know that President Trump is not very happy about NATO – we talked about this. But we need security guarantees," the Head of State said. He is convinced that without collective security guarantees, European guarantees alone will not be enough. This issue has been discussed previously.
According to the Ukrainian leader, European countries understand that without the involvement of the United States and President Trump, security guarantees will remain insufficient.

A Russian drone attack on a residential block killed nine people including three elderly couples in the eastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, officials said on Thursday. "This is a terrible tragedy, a terrible Russian crime. It is very important that the world does not pause in putting pressure on Russia for this terror," President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on social media. National Police later said the search operation had been completed after 19 hours, with rescuers finding nine bodies in the ruins, while 13 people were wounded. Among the dead were three couples — men and women between the ages of 61 and 74 — Ukrainian prosecutors said. Those killed also included a 37-year-old woman, while her eight-year-old daughter was wounded, the Sumy prosecutor's office said.

Sumy lies just over the border from Russia in northeastern Ukraine and has been regularly targeted by Moscow. Around 255,000 people lived there before the war.

The retired Israeli Patriot PAC-2 interceptors are badly needed in Ukraine and more missiles, and even surplus missile batteries, could follow.

U.S. military is providing Ukraine with around 90 interceptors for the Patriot air defense system, taking these from Israeli stocks, according to a recent report. The development, the implications of which we addressed in detail in the past, comes as Israel mulls whether to approve the transfer of significant quantities of Soviet- and Russian-made weapons to Ukraine that were seized from Hezbollah militants in recent operations.

As well as the interceptors, can immediately be used by Ukraine’s existing Patriot systems, the sources state that other components from the system, including radars, will be provided to Kyiv from Israeli stocks. These items, however, will first be refurbished in the U.S. Aa spokesperson for Israeli prime minister’s office confirmed at least one Patriot system had been returned to US but said they didn’t know if it would ultimately be delivered to Ukraine. IDF operated PAC-2 GEM-T version of the Patriot, with 8 batteries reportedly deployed before their withdrawal. Local known by Hebrew name Yahalom, meaning diamond, the systems underwent local upgrades in Israel. Cool

To Ukraine in particular, the PAC-2’s terminal-phase anti-ballistic missile capability is of particular relevance, although system is highly versatile & able to defeat a broad spectrum of targets. Not only can the PAC-2 GEM series defeat fast-moving ballistic missiles, for Eg an improved seeker makes it better able to engage smaller targets or ones otherwise with smaller radar cross-sections. This makes it a formidable asset to deploy against fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and drones.

Pentagon has provided only three U.S.-made Patriot batteries to Ukraine, while Germany has donated another three batteries and six launchers, the Netherlands has donated five launchers, and Romania has donated a battery that was funded by U.S. and Norway. On video indicates, at least some of these systems have already been lost and they remain among the most prized targets for the Russian military.

The delivery of Israeli military hardware to Ukraine, even if by a roundabout route, is highly significant. Since start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Israeli govt has repeatedly refused to send arms to Ukraine, while seeking to maintain relations with Moscow. In particular, Israel has been worried that direct support for Ukraine could be met by a Russian response in the form of providing Iran with more capable weapons that could in turn be used against Israel.

One Ukrainian official reportedly told Axios that Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu refused to take calls on the issue of Patriot transfers “for weeks.”
Final Israeli approval for the arrangement was given in late September, an Israeli official told the same publication. There’s also a precedent for this, in the transfer of artillery ammunition from Israeli stocks to Israel in 2023. In the same way, shells were officially handed over to the U.S before being transferred to Ukraine. Russia was told in advance about the Patriot transfer.
