Stopping China’s Growth - Has the West been scoring its own goal ?

Cool

Quote:"....Do we want China to fail?

This question came up at a recent seminar I attended for Western politicians and commentators.
The group was flipping through a report on the coming year when one of our staff asked why one of the dangers listed for 2023 was a sharp slowdown in Chinese growth. “Isn’t that what we want?” he asked.

It’s a valid question. After all, the US President has repeatedly stated that he is ready to go to war with China to defend Taiwan. The EU describes the country as a “systemic rival”. Britain is debating formally declaring China a “threat”. If you see a country as a threat and a rival, surely you wouldn’t want its economy to grow rapidly?

Quote:...Oswald Spengler, the prophet of the decline of the West, left a terrible question for the West more than a century ago. If the decline of the West is caused by its own doing, then it has no one to blame. But if the rise of non-white people causes the West to decline, should the West eliminate them?

The crisis in the West is racial war by nature. The Western angst about China echoes the “Yellow Peril” sentiment as well. We are again living in a Spenglerian world.

Actually this is one of the better and more objective articles that I have read coming out from the mainstream media. No doubt it's a western POV, but at least the author lays out facts objectively without trying to make some idiotic ideological or moral argument.

Unfortunately, his advice of allying with the usual EU27, 5E and JP/KR to strengthen current order is one of those good in theory but unfeasible in real life.

There are two fundamental issues he did not address:

1) EU27, 5E and JPKR all have very deep economic links with China. If the US tries to do something overboard, the alliance will fracture. Trying to maintain a world #1 position is something critical to US, but not so for the other allies. They may prefer US to be #1, but China becoming #1 isn't really detrimental to them either.

This difference in core national priority will naturally result in a stark difference in the price each country is willing to pay to antagonize China.

2) The world isn't just these 34 "western" countries. While maintaining the current "rules" might be beneficial to them, what's in it for the rest of the 150+ countries ?

The 34 countries' well-being is very dependent on the rest of the world as well. Just a wrong step and they might find themselves the ones getting isolated instead of China.

Just look at the Ukraine war, despite all 34 of them ganging up on Russia, there is still no end in sight. Most of the Europeans simply pay lip service or dump old outdated hardware as a token of support to Ukraine.

Economic wise, the envisioned social collapse of Russia coming from the Swift financial nuke did not materialize. Other than few active players, most of the world seem to have moved on and pay little interest to the ongoing war.

Russia is essentially just a power up version of North Korea, lacking in most aspects other than having nukes. If they can't even properly get together to take on Russia, there isn't a snowball chance in hell they can move as one against China.

Welcome your comment..My point can be best explained by borrowing the final paragraph in your post and ask this....

Biden is running out of excuses, $, time and brain-cells in his quest to contain China.

How I know ? Let's see what NYT has to say... Big Grin

The US has spent the past 5 Years pushing to reduce its reliance on China for computer chips, solar panels and various consumer imports amid growing concern over Beijing’s "security threats, human rights record" and dominance of critical industries.
...a growing body of evidence suggests that the world’s largest economies remain deeply intertwined as Chinese products make their way to America through other countries.
