US-made 2,000-pound bombs with 85 bombs likely used, killed Hezbollah chief

A video published by the Israeli military on Saturday showed jets it said were used to carry out the attack carrying at least 15 2,000-pound bombs, including the US-made BLU-109, according to Trevor Ball, a former senior explosive ordnance technician for the US Army who reviewed the footage for CNN.

Such Bomb from U.S. or Israel added somethings in... Tongue
bombs, known colloquially as “bunker busters” for their ability to penetrate deep underground before they detonate, were also fitted with the US-made Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) – a precision guidance kit that converts unguided, or “dumb” bombs, into “smart” munitions that can precisely strike a target – according to Ball. On one plane fitted with bombs, pictured taking off in the video, Ball identified at least four as BLU-109s with JDAM kits.
Other types of large bombs may have been used in the operation, Ball added, but only the BLU-109s were visible in the footage. The munitions contain 535 pounds of explosives, significantly less than MK84s, another type of 2,000-pound bomb frequently used by the Israeli military. “BLU-109s give up explosive weight to be able to penetrate targets better than a MK84,” Ball said.
Video and imagery that CNN geolocated to the scene of the attack in Beirut’s southern suburbs, known as Dahiyeh, show a large, deep crater, surrounded by rubble from the destroyed buildings. A CNN analysis of video and satellite imagery confirmed four multistory apartment buildings were leveled in the attack.

According to news reports, the Israeli Air Force’s (IAF) 27 September strike on Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah involved the employment of 80 weapons in urban Beirut. Based on Israeli Defense Ministry statements, videos, and photos, the New York Times and Times of Israel reported that the F-15I strike fighters (the Israeli version of the F-15E Strike Eagle) employed GBU-31(v)3 Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs) on four high-rise buildings in the strike.

Reporting on the quantity of JDAMs used varies between 60 and 80 weapons, and it is unclear whether all the weapons employed were GBU-31(v)3 and whether 60 to 80 represents the quantity of weapons dropped or the overall size of the strike package (which would include some redundancy).

Regardless, to U.S. strike aviators with experience in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF, in Afghanistan), Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), and Operation Inherent Resolve (in Syria), using the GBU-31(v)3 in such quantity against urban targets might raise some eyebrows.

Hezbollah vs Israel: A visual guide to 'bunker buster' bomb that killed Nasrallah

American-manufactured 2,000-pound bombs were likely used in the Israeli attack that killed Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, in Beirut on Friday night, according to a review of footage showing the operation and its aftermath by CNN and munitions experts.

A specially built BLU-109 bomb body of the 2,000-lb class, and unique fuse settings to allow bomb to penetrate heavily fortified structures such as multi-story buildings, caves, and bunkers. GBU-31(v)3 is JDAM successor to the laser-guided GBU-24, most notably carried by Maverick’s strike force in Top Gun: Maverick.

Guildings targeted in Lebanon were high-rises basements, possibly bunkers below basements, using GBU-31(v)3s makes sense as primary strike weapons. Exact settings are classified, but bunker buster’s electronic fuse can be set for a long delay. Combined with the hardened bomb body, this allows weapon to punch through to the heart of a structure be4 detonating—ideally inside a room where explosive damage can destroy.

Two factors in Israeli strike stand out first is quantity. A U.S. Air Force Central Command report 2003 invasion of Iraq, U.S. air forces expended a total of 24 GBU-24 and GBU-28 (4,000-lb) (bunker busters) in the entire conflict against Iraqi military. Last Friday, Israel dropped up to three times as many weapons in one night. Considering the targets, however, helps explain the apparent overkill.

According to New York Times, targets appear to have been four high-rise buildings within a city block to buildings are in close proximity to many others, which presumably are not Hezbollah facilities. Precise weaponeering—planning the correct number and type of weapons for a given target—must have preceded the strike and would have relied on as much detail about target buildings’ structure as possible. Given Israel’s successful infiltration of Hezbollah’s communications, knowledge of Nasrallah’s whereabouts, its easy to imagine intelligence collecting details on buildings’ construction, would be needed to plan the strike.

Exchange of strikes between Israel and Lebanese militant group Hezbollah have been occurring along the Israel–Lebanon border and in Syria and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights a day after 7 October 2023. It is currently the largest escalation of the Hezbollah–Israel conflict to have occurred since the 2006 Lebanon War, and part of the spillover of the Israel–Hamas war.

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is set to lead Friday prayers, deliver a public sermon could shed light on Islamic republic’s plans after a massive missile attack on Israel.

Israeli military on Thursday (October 3, 2024) night warned people to evacuate communities in southern Lebanon that are outside a U.N.-declared buffer zone, signalling it may widen a ground operation launched earlier this week against the Hezbollah militant group. Meanwhile, Israeli forces said they had struck around 200 Hezbollah targets across Lebanon, including weapons-storage facilities and observation posts. Strikes continued overnight when a series of massive blasts rocked Beirut’s southern suburbs. It was not immediately clear what was targeted or if there were casualties.

7 front including Hezbollah & its backer, Iran.

The region is still bracing for Israel’s response to last Tuesday’s Iranian missile barrage.

Israel pounded southern Beirut with heavy airstrikes overnight, with the military saying it was targeting Hezbollah. A CNN correspondent said they were some of the most intense since the current conflict erupted between Israel and the militant group and......And In Gaza, it encircled a refugee camp north after seeing signs of Hamas regrouping. Separately, strikes on a central Gaza mosque killed at least 25 people, according to hospital officials. The Israeli military said Hamas was embedded in the compound.
