Eight people lost their sight, four of whom had to undergo eye surgery. A multi-resistant germ that was found in eye drops from US manufacturers is likely to be responsible for this.
Ten different brands were initially identified as possibly linked to the outbreak, the CDC said. Eye drops, which are manufactured in India and imported into the US under two brands, were subsequently pulled from shelves in January and February.
In January, the CDC warned people to stop using EzriCare and Delsam Pharma drops.
The following month, the company that owns the brands - Global Pharma - voluntarily recalled after a formal recommendation from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Last week, the FDA issued separate recall notices for some eye drops sold by Pharmedica and Apotex after the companies said they had voluntarily taken them off the shelves.
