Why I am voting for Tan Kin Lian, if you need 16 reasons:
1. Ong Teng Cheong's (OTC) rightful place as Singapore's first Elected President in our history was casually removed to facilitate a "Reserved Election" in 2017. (This despite the then PM Goh Chok Tong having written to OTC's children at his death, addressing their father as Singapore's first elected President.)
2. The "Reserved Election" was conveniently and suspiciously introduced at a time when Tan Cheng Bock was widely popular and would have won the 2017 elections. Instead, he too was edited out by this "Reserved Election".
2b. The Constitution was changed in 2017 to make it such that Tan Cheng Bock no longer qualified to run for the presidency (in 2017 and 2023, and beyond).
3. The 2 non-PAP would-be candidates in 2017 were disqualified, leaving Halimah Yacob, an ex-PAP Speaker and minister of State, with a walkover.
4. The Presidential Elections Committee (PEC) works in secret and does not avail itself to media queries in person.
5. The PEC, an unelected Committee, is not obliged to disclose or explain its reasons for approving or disapproving applicants for candidacy.
6. Why is the PEC given the authority to decide if a person - who obviously is successful in his life and career, given the onerous criteria to run as a candidate - why is the PEC given the authority to decide if such persons are people of "integrity, good character and reputation"? Are the PEC members themselves of such virtues? Who knows!
7. The rushed time frame for the campaign, juxtaposed with the outcome of applications for approval, gives PAP ministers an advantage over other candidates or applicants when it comes to logistical campaign planning.
8. George Goh, despite his lifetime of hard work in achieving his success in business, is deemed unqualified to run for the presidency.
9. PAP ministers are PAP ministers today, but become presidents the next, and then claim they are independent and can check on the PAP govt. Tony Tan (32 years PAP member), Halimah Yacob (16 years), and Tharman (22 years) were all ex-PAP ministers before they became presidents.
10. The Constitution has been amended numerous times with regards to the elected president post, seemingly tweaked each time the PAP preferred candidate doesn't do as well as the PAP expected, or the non-PAP candidates had come close to becoming president.
11. The elected presidency has been politicised by the PAP, and is a divisive scheme. It divides Singaporeans every 6 years, even as the candidates pledge to "unify Singaporeans".
12. The elected president is designed to be "above politics", but this can never be so when ex-PAP ministers become presidents.
13. Out of the 5 terms of the elected presidents so far, only twice have there been actual elections, making a mockery of the term "elected president".
14. Voting for Tan Kin Lian will be entirely in line with the nature of the elected presidency as it currently stands - a sham.
15. In all its 30 years of existence, not a single independent candidate who is not affiliated to the PAP or the govt in some way, has stepped up and found to be eligible to contest.
16. The Council of Presidential Advisors (CPA), another unelected group, seemingly has equal power to the Elected President - if they disagreed with the president and agreed with the govt, the matter would be subject to a vote in Parliament which can overrule the president with a 2/3 majority vote. (The PAP has an overwhelming 90% of the MPs in Parliament.) Why does an unelected group of people have such powers?
Voting for Tharman, or spoiling your vote, means you support all of the above.
