Guy is an informal word for man.

While gal is also informal, it is the word "girl" as pronounced in a certain accent, and over time, it became interchangeable.. You don't use it to refer to women who ain't SYT anymore, certainly not to grandmothers.

So, yup! I would not be wrong to call a 32 year old man a guy though I don't use this word often because I don't like the words guy and gal, but it would still sound inept to call an 85 year old grandpa a guy/
