City since been under control of Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), which led the October offensive has promised to eradicate cyber-scamming from its territory.

Operation 1027: Major Gains in Phase Two of Myanmar Resistance Offensive. Junta has suffered another humiliating defeat and more territory losses since the Brotherhood Alliance of ethnic armies and allies resumed Operation 1027 on June 25. Brotherhood’s Myanmar Nationalities Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) and Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), plus resistance groups including People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) under the civilian National Unity Government (NUG), are attacking the regime in northern Shan State and northern Mandalay Region.

In the past month, the junta has lost around 100 bases, several military battalions including North Eastern Command headquarters, and at least six towns including northern Shan State’s capital, Lashio. Below, The Irrawaddy highlights the significant gains made by the armed resistance in phase two of Operation 1027. 

The TNLA and allied groups including Mandalay People’s Defense Forces managed to take effective control of Nawnghkio town in northern Shan State on the second day of attacks after Operation 1027 resumed on June 25. TNLA & allies claimed complete control of Nawnghkio Township on July 10 after seizing its remaining junta position, Missile Battalion 606 HQ.

Myanmar Deputy Commander Killed After Retreating to Hilltop Base-1Lashio.

The deputy commander of the North Eastern Command, Brigadier General Tin Tun Aung, was killed after being severely wounded in a rocket attack on the hilltop base he had retreated to in Lashio, the capital of northern Shan State, resistance sources said. The brigadier general oversaw the defense of the city with Colonel Thant Htin Soe – Commander-in-Chief of the North Eastern Command – following the coordinated attack on the city by the Myanmar Nationalities Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) and its allies that began on July.r Gen Tin Tun Aung and his troops shifted their defense position to Lashio City Hall on July 23-24 b4 retreating to a hilltop base on July 25, a military info tipped off resistance fighters he had moved to a new position. MNDAA swiftly launched a rocket attack on hilltop base on July 25, “Within 30 minutes after telling revolutionary groups the location of junta’s deputy commander, MNDAA attacked hilltop base with 107mm rockets,” the source explained.

The head of the northern Shan State Police Force, Colonel Hla Min, was killed in the rocket attack and Brig-Gen Tin Tun Taung sustained serious injuries, the source said. The brigadier general’s death was confirmed by a military informant on Sunday, the source said. MNDAA and its allies seized the hilltop base on July 27.  MNDAA is a member of the Brotherhood Alliance, which launched Operation 1027 on October 27 last year. The coordinated offensive steamrolled through northern Shan State and was closing in on its goal of liberating the region from the regime’s military when a China-brokered ceasefire halted its progress in January. The operation resumed on July 3 with attacks on regime bases in Lashio township. MNDAA and its allies are poised to assert complete control over Lashio after seizing the headquarters of the junta’s North Eastern Command on Thursday.

Intense clashes continued on Tuesday as resistance groups fought to take the regime’s remaining military bases in the city. On Saturday, the MNDAA announced the formation of a commission to rebuild and administer the city.
Since June 25, another Brotherhood Alliance member, the Ta’ang National Liberation Army, has been fighting junta troops west of Lashio, in northern Shan State and northern Mandalay Region, along with other resistance groups including People’s Defense Forces under the command of the civilian National Unity Government.

Since Operation 1027 resumed, ethnic armies and allied resistance groups have captured six towns and cities, including the Lashio, and about 100 junta bases, including several battalion headquarters, in northern Shan State and northern Mandalay Region.

Assaults continue on junta’s last remaining Bangladesh-Myanmar border outpost. Although Arakan Army has gained the upper hand in Maungdaw Township, Rakhine State, army troops & junta-trained militias are reportedly still active in the area and taking civilians hostage.

Clashes are ongoing in Maungdaw Township, Rakhine State between the Arakan Army (AA) and regime forces defending the last remaining border police station and deployed throughout the township, locals said. 

While some junta forces have retreated several days of assaults by AA forces on Border Guard Police Battalion 5 station, the last remaining junta position@Maungdaw Township, enough remained to defend the outpost. The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) says it has seized complete control of a third town, Mongmit, in northern Shan State following the resumption of Operation 1027 in late June. The junta’s Infantry Battalion 276, Light Infantry Battalion 348, a tactical command overseen by North Command fell on Wednesday, TNLA spokesman Lwei Yay Oo told The Irrawaddy.

Arakan Army in Push to Seize Maungdaw in Myanmar’s Rakhine. Fighting has intensified in Rakhine State’s Maungdaw town since the ethnic Arakan Army (AA) launched an onslaught against the last junta battalion defending the frontier town in western Myanmar on Monday, according to sources close to the AA.

The AA is conducting a fierce assault on the headquarters of the 5th Border Guard Police Battalion on the outskirts of Maungdaw, and against junta troops deployed in the town, said a Maungdaw resident close to the AA.

One junta Major General died is nothing compared to hundreds or even thousands of civilians who are killed by the junta military.

A Myanmar ethnic minority armed group said on Saturday (Aug 3) that it had captured a regional military command after weeks of clashes, in what would be a major blow to the junta. Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) fighters have “fully captured the HQ of the northeast military command” in Lashio in northern Shan state, group said statement.

Fighting rocked Lashio, that sits on a major trade highway to China, since July MNDAA fighters renewed an offensive against the junta. A no comment from junta spokesman source told AFP on Aug 3. “soldiers who have been resisting for weeks inside north eastern command started retreating this morning”.

Myanmar’s military has 14 regional commands across the country, from the Himalayan foothills in the north to the sprawling southern delta region bordering Indian Ocean. Soldiers in at least 10 of them are currently engaged in fighting established ethnic minority armed groups or newer “People’s Defence Forces” has sprung up to battle military junta since its 2021 coup. The capture of Lashio would be first time military has lost a regional command during the conflict which erupted more than 3-years ago. Military is yet to recover territory in northern Shan state lost to an alliance of ethnic minority armed groups, including the MNDAA, launched late 2023.

That offensive saw MNDAA capture the city of Laukkai near China border, after around 2,000 junta troops surrendered, in one of the military’s biggest single defeats in decades.

Enter the Dragon, Exit the Junta: Myanmar’s Brotherhood Alliance makes Chinese New Year Vow. The ethnic alliance launched Operation 1027 in northern Shan State with the stated objective of ending military dictatorship combating cybercriminals operating on the Myanmar-China border. MNDAA has since seized northern Shan’s Kokang border area from junta troops while the TNLA has taken control of seven nearby towns. Message said alliance had halted its northern Shan offensive in line with last mth’s China-brokered ceasefire to ensure people living along border can celebrate Chinese New Year in safety. However, the AA continues to battle junta troops in northern Rakhine State, seizing a number of towns & dozens of outposts.

Since MNDAA has hosted an event to celebrate its liberation of Kokang from junta rule. It was attended by leaders of all three alliance members, namely MNDAA commander Peng Daxun (aka Peng Daren), AA chief Major-General Twan Mrat Naing, and TNLA chair Lieutenant-General Tar Aik Phone, according to the TNLA.

Speaking at the event, Tar Aik Phone said TNLA had proven unity with alliance in fight to liberate Kokang, called for perseverance & unwavering faith to achieve the goal of ousting the junta. The alliance was currently clearing leftover explosives, enforcing law & order, & rebuilding damaged roads and bridges in areas seized by the MNDAA and TNLA. Confirming its military and political objectives remain unchanged, the alliance said it had the same aspiration as Myanmar people and was taking action every day to achieve that end.

Lashio is the largest town in northern Shan State, Myanmar, about 200 k/m north-east of Mandalay situated on a low mountain spur overlooking valley of Yaw River. Loi Leng, the highest mountain of the Shan Hills, is located 45 km to the south-east of Lashio....Wikipedia.

More than 100 people including the wounded and their family members and locals, who are receiving treatment, at the No.9 100-bed Military Hospital in Lashio were reportedly detained by Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) and its allies.

CCTV footage hospital showed MNDAA arrested patients, who can walk, were not seriously injured, & their family members from military hospital. Folks with serious injuries, doctors & nurses are not seen in the circulating video. According to Eleven Media Grp's investigation, more than 100 were killed when MNDAA & its allies attacked No.9 100-bed Military Hospital, fate of the people who can't walk, people with serious injuries, doctors & nurses is not known yet. It is known that were wounded soldiers, some local who came to military hospital for medical treatment when fighting started in Lashio city b'cos they could not receive medical treatment at the Lashio public hospital.

In addition, there are various reports about the attack on hospital & the killings, the details of the incident can only be known accurately after a systematic investigation. Regard circumstances on attack on military hospital & deaths, SAC’s info team has not yet confirmed anything in response to media's inquiries. If further confirmations are received, they will be disclosed promptly.

Myanmar Junta Airstrikes Kill 13 Civilians After Defeat in Mandalay Township. 2-children among 13 civilians killed by junta airstrikes on resistance-controlled township in Mandalay on Sunday, Mandalay People’s Defense Forces (PDFs). A junta fighter jet attacked Kan Taung village in Singu township about 1pm despite no reports clashes, killing 3-civilians including a child & injuring 13.

Junta bombed Ngwe Yone village at around 3.30 pm, same day, killing 10 residents including a child & wounding 6 others, a Mandalay PDF statement released on Sunday night. The PDF said regime used cluster bombs, have been banned by over 120 countries, in both attacks.

Mandalay PDFs under the civilian National Unity Government (NUG) took complete control of Singu Township on July 20 after around 20 days of attacks on regime targets. Singu is just 91 kilometers north of Myanmar’s second-biggest city, Mandalay, and is the first town seized by the PDF in Mandalay Region. The regime responded to the loss with airstrikes that destroyed numerous houses and injured residents, said Mandalay PDF spokesman Ko Osmond.

Myanmar’s Brotherhood Alliance Calls on Northeast Command Chief to Surrender. The ethnic Brotherhood Alliance has called on Northeastern Command chief Brigadier-General Soe Hlaing to surrender along with his forces, sources told The Irrawaddy.
