Spain’s Defense Ministry on Tuesday denied Washington’s claims that it will participate in a multinational force to patrol the Red Sea.

In a statement released to Spanish media outlets including the ABC and La Vanguardia, the ministry said Spain cannot make the decision unilaterally, and is subject to decisions made by the EU and NATO.

Spain will not intervene "unilaterally" in the new military mission that the United States promotes in the Red Sea and will only do so under the umbrella of the European Union or NATO, as explained by sources from the Ministry of Defense.

Hours later, in a new statement, the United States no longer referred to a specific mission and limited itself to saying that Austin had urged countries to join the international initiatives in the Red Sea, led by the Pentagon, under the umbrella of the Combined Task Force. 153 (CTF 153) , one of its five naval forces focused on the Red Sea area, Bab al-Mandeb and the Gulf of Aden.

"The United States will continue to consult and work with allies and partners who share the fundamental principle of freedom of navigation," he stated.
