A great many have said that, because lockdowns are extremely unpopular, legally questionable and on top of that a heavy burden on the economy and public finances and, as a result, of course also on the approval ratings of politicians.

Fight against the coronavirus: the big lockdown begins

In Salzburg and Upper Austria everyone will have to go into lockdown from next week. The federal and state governments are still discussing how things will continue in the rest of the country

The hard lockdown since Thursday in the two high incidence federal states of Salzburg and Upper Austria is a done deal. The two countries now have a seven-day incidence per 100,000 inhabitants of 1,740 and 1,591 respectively. There is currently a dispute over a nationwide lockdown for everyone. In response to a STANDARD request, the Chancellery said on Thursday evening that there would be no nationwide lockdown. In addition to the two lockdown countries, Vorarlberg, Carinthia and Tyrol have cracked the thousand mark in incidence. A high was reached on Thursday with 15,145 new infections.
