Jan 19 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden on Friday announced student debt cancellation of nearly US$5 billion for an additional 74,000 borrowers, including more than half who earned forgiveness after 10 years of public service as teachers, nurses and firefighters.
The White House announcement brings the total loan forgiveness approved by the Biden-Harris administration to US$136.6 billion for more than 3.7 million Americans.

Biden vowed to continue working to deliver student debt relief to as many borrowers as possible in the wake of the Supreme Court’s June 30 ruling blocking his plan to cancel hundreds of billions of dollars in debt.

As of June 2023, approximately 43.4 million student loan recipients had US$1.63 trillion in outstanding loans

The figure represents an increase of nearly US$17 billion in the outstanding loan balance and almost 600,000 in the number of student loan recipients since last year
