The NYT, quoting multiple officials, said on this day, "There is a possibility that North Korea will take lethal military action against South Korea in the next few months after changing its (South Korea) policy to a hostile line."

They cited North Korea's shelling of Yeonpyeong Island in 2010 as a similar example.

The newspaper reported that the authors analyzed Chairman Kim's recent remarks and found that "a strategic decision was made to go to war," which was also read by U.S. government analysts and policymakers.

Robert Carlin, a researcher at the Middlebury Institute for International Studies, pointed out that Chairman Kim has effectively abandoned the decades-old policy of normalizing relations between North Korea and the United States. “I am surprised to see how worryingly the situation is changing,” he said, predicting that North Korea would prefer a surprise attack.

“We don’t want an administration that wins wars,” those gathered said. “We want one that prevents wars.”

At the press meeting, Kim Dong-yup, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies said, “With the buffer zones between the two countries disappearing after the dissolution of the Sept. 19 inter-Korean military agreement, the possibility of accidental clashes occurring has increased by tenfold. While North Korea is responsible for the current crisis, South Korea is also posing military threats by holding joint exercises with the US and Japan.”

“I want to ask if the military’s policy of responding to North Korean threats with ‘swift, forceful and definitive’ action is being upheld with the best interest of the country’s people at heart,” he added.
