I doubt Ukraine reinforcement are all ready to fight. Newer batches a lot are forced conscripts. I already saw many videos of surrendering Ukrainian who told the Russians a lot are caught in public and forced into the battle. Once landed Russian arty and mortar shells fell and Ukraine officers either killed or forced the conscripts to advance. Under such situations I think most Ukrainian conscripts see chance will go over and surrender revealing troop movement etc info.

"The enemy ref to the Russian, has amassed a grouping of 20,000-25,000 servicemen" around Chasiv Yar, Nazar Voloshyn, a spokesperson for Ukraine's Khortytsia grouping of forces, told Ukrainian television in remarks reported by domestic media.

This news: Newsweek has reached Russian Defense Ministry for no comment via email.

Chasiv Yar, a key town that sits west of the Russian-controlled Donetsk city of Bakhmut, was described by the U.S. think tank, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), as a "fortress city." Capturing Chasiv Yar would help Russia attack the rest of Ukraine's significant defensive settlements, the ISW has evaluated.

Seizing Chasiv Yar could also allow Russia to cut off the settlement of Kostiantynivka, which would compromise the "backbone of Ukraine's defense" in the Donetsk region, the ISW said.

Ukraine's army chief, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi, said last mth. Moscow is attempting to "break through our defenses west of Bakhmut," to try take control of Chasiv Yar, to "create conditions for further advance" toward Donetsk city of Kramatorsk that lies northwest of Chasiv Yar.

Ukraine can recruit up to 20,000 convicts into army soon, Justice Minister says.

This could fill its ranks with as many as 20,000 convicts in a move that also help ease overcrowding in Ukrainian prisons, Justice Minister Denys Maliuska told BBC Ukraine on May 10.

(Ukraine's parliament, has passed a bill on May 8 permitting convicted of certain offenses can serve in military, paving way for voluntary mobilization of prisoners.)

Proposal was first submitted to parliament in March as Ukraine's efforts to replenish ranks in Armed Forces amid on war with (Putin / Russia) vs russia federation.

Deputy Justice Minister in March proposal says could free up 50,000 recruits among those who already served their sentence, as well as 26,000 of those who are currently imprisoned. (Maliuska) said to supported the bill but it is up to Ukraine's Armed Forces "to determine who is suitable for them and who is not."

Prisoners who serving sentences due to "extreme" crimes should be left to serve their sentences, as Ukraine could recruit 10,000 to 20,000 convicts, estimated is the "Question is in approaches. He's saying the numbers are completely uncalculated, because depending on each scenario, the number will be different," Maliuska said. He acknowledged such move is 100% echo Russia's policy of recruiting prisoners.
50,000 of whom joined the notorious Wagner Group in 2022 and were deployed in costly assaults against Ukrainian positions.
"Of course, there is a parallel. You should not deceive oneself, but it is still a matter of a difference in approaches," Maliuska argued recruiting convicts would help solve overcrowding in Ukrainian prisons.

The number of inmates per prison fluctuates depending on region & type of detention, "concentration of people per average institution has increased significantly" (since full-scale invasion).

Pre-trial detention centers face most overcrowding, in big cities there is huge overcrowding," Maliuska said they will go into their normal army training.
Ukrainian pilots fly dangerous "wild weasel" missions to suppress Russian air defenses.
Advanced US-supplied missiles have played a critical role in since mid 2022 missions.
Since mid-2022, US has supplied Ukraine with HARMs, providing Ukrainian pilots with Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) and Destruction of Enemy Air Defenses (DEAD) capabilities.(Note): US Air Force pioneered SEAD tactics in Vietnam War. So-called wild weasel aircraft were tasked with destroying enemy air defense radars to clear way for attack aircraft to fly through. (Wild weasels is radar receivers to locate air defenses, initially armed with bombs and later special missiles that target radar.

Soon arrival F-16 fighter jets will help level out in air superiority, to targeting them with their radars, radar waves are then traced back to their source, Ukraine pilots retaliate with weapons like US-made newer weapon.

The term "wild weasel" originated from Project Wild Weasel. US Air Force anti-SAM strategy used direct attacks to suppress enemy air defenses, HARM is the latest of US air-to-surface missiles: a projectile of around 770 pounds, has a range of 90 miles, missiles can locate strike enemy radar even after radar systems have been turned off. HARM has been used in wars in Libya, Iraq, and former Yugoslavia.

This experience is put to good used in Ukraine. "Learning from Western military, to put great emphasis on SEAD & DEAD missions, "its can be "very dangerous," especially for wild weasels, but Russian air defenses are a key target. This game is worth the candle he added, but Ukraine's tactics "go far beyond classic wild weasel missions". From special forces raids to land-launched missiles like GMLRS, ATACMS & UAVs of all sorts, Ukrainians use all kind of weapons, & systems they have at their disposal to suppress & destroy Russian air defenses."

Mertens said Western weapons use in Ukraine is difficulty in adapting HARM for Ukraine due to incompatibility of old Soviet-era jets, like MIG-29 & Su-27, with modern Western technology. US Undersecretary Defense for Acquisition & Sustainment William LaPlante @Washington DC conference said. Ukraine used iPads to make jets compatible to Western weapons, he described how Ukraine's aging fighter took to Western weapons & getting them to work on aircraft were "basically controlled by iPad by pilot, a necessary to adapt, and did fired hundreds of HARMs b4 at Russian air defense radar systems.

However, Justin Bronk, Senior Research Fellow for Airpower & Technology at London-based think tank Royal United says. "They initially achieved a successful kills against Russian SAM systems & radars when first introduced;, but HARM launches serve "a suppressive rather than destructive purpose." When launched, "missiles Russian SAM operators have to turn off their radars & to avoid being hit,"

Bronk said. "¹Leaves a short window within which strike systems like HIMARS rockets or Storm Shadow missiles can get through to nearby targets with much less risk of being intercepted by the Russian SAMs." While Awaiting for F-16s the modified Soviet-era fighter jets allow Ukrainians to use HARM missiles.

"The all capabilities F-16," Gen. James Hecker, commander for Euro US Air Forces said during a roundtable @Air Force Asso Space Cyber conference, the delivery of F-16s will be crucial for increasing Ukrainian air superiority. A F-16 aircraft is pictured after the first delivery of Norway's old F-16 fighter aircraft to Romania at Rygge Air Force Base, Norway on Nov. 28, 2023.

Earlier this week, Netherlands announced plans to start delivering F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine this autumn, Dutch Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren said during a press briefing in Vilnius. Denmark said it would transferring its aircraft in summer, "dealing with Russian GBAD [Ground Based Air Defense] will be crucial is future Ukrainian air strikes once F-16 fighters arrive," delivery of such a small number of F-16s can't be overestimated,

Mertens believes they can significantly impact Crimea. "Crimea is vulnerable: the Russians have relatively limited maneuver space on the Peninsula, resupply is dependent on Kerch bridge, and here Putin has a lot to lose both politically and militarily," he said. If a limited number of fighters can have a real impact is here."

Ukraine’s military says it ‘partially’ pushing Russian forces out of Vovchansk

Ukraine’s military on Wednesday said it had “partially pushed enemy forces out of the settlement” of Vovchansk, a town in the Kharkiv region that has become a battle hotspot in recent days.

Ukraine’s army trying to attacks Russia and at least in parts pushing them out as it continued to defend the town, General Staff of Ukraine’s armed forces said in a Google-Telegram post.

Three combat clashes were registered in the Kharkiv region on Wednesday, and there were two strikes on the area from Russian aircraft, Ukraine said. CNBC could not independently verify the reports.
updates: "Kyiv says ‘difficult to hold ground"

Military paramedics treat a wounded Ukrainian soldier near town of Vovchansk in Kharkiv region of Ukraine on May 12, 2024, after Russia launched a new offensive there.

Russia has hit a high-rise residential building in Kharkiv, injuring at least 17 people, local officials say.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken argues Putin has destroyed Ukraine, Russia must pay to rebuild as he says US intends to use its power to seize Russian assets.

Zelenskyy has asked for Patriot missile defence systems to defence city of Kharkiv near Russian border.

Moscow’s troops have captured about up to 125sq km (40 to 50sq miles) in Kharkiv region, including at least 7 villages, according to open-source analysts.

Ukraine asks US to lift ban on using American arms to strike at Russian territory.
Ukrainian officials are trying to convince Washington to allow Kyiv to strike at Russian territory with U.S.-supplied weapons, saying the ban prevented them from attacking Russian troops amassing near Kharkiv Oblast, Politico reported on May 14.

Moscow's troops launched a new offensive into northeastern Kharkiv Oblast through the Russo-Ukrainian border on May 10, with 30,000 troops reportedly involved in the operation.

A group of Ukrainian parliamentarians is in Washington this week to mobilize support in the U.S. Congress, saying that the ban prevented them from hitting Russian military depots across the border, Politico wrote.

The U.S. has supplied Ukraine with long-range ATACMS missiles, which Ukraine reportedly used to strike Russian targets in occupied Crimea. Washington's restrictions, as described by Ukrainian officials, would prevent the replication of such an attack inside Russian territory.

"The main problem right now is the White House policy to limit our capability" to strike military targets inside Russia, said David Arakhamia, the parliamentary leader of President Volodymyr Zelensky's party, the Servant of the People.

Ukraine war latest: 30,000 Russian troops involved in Kharkiv Oblast offensive, Ukrainian official says "We saw their military sitting one or two kilometers from the border inside Russia, and there was nothing we could do about that," Oleksandra Ustinova, the head of the Ukraine's parliamentary commission on arms and ammunition, told Politico in a separate interview.

"(T)hey (Russia) know there is a restriction for Ukrainians to shoot at the Russian territory. And we saw all of their military equipment sitting one or two kilometers from the border (near Kharkiv), and there was nothing we could do," Ustinova noted.
The assistance is for the defense and not for offensive operations in Russian territory," one of them told the news outlet.

While U.K. said they does not oppose Ukraine using British-supplied weapons to strike directly at Russia starting from May as some countries had sent weapons to Kyiv with no restrictions strikes inside Russian, what if it happen in Ukraine is expected to be another tough year.

Belbek Airfield, Russian-occupied Crimea, Russian firefighters douse the charred wreck of a 92N6E “Grave Stone” missile control radar, hit by a Ukrainian ATACMS.

Even if some aircraft escaped damage, the raid was still a costly one for the Russians.
The Russian air force deployed four or five S-400 batteries in Crimea before the wider war kicked off in February 2022. Between recent ATACMS strike & previous ones, at least one of these batteries has gone up in flames, leaving gaps in Russian defenses in Crimea that make subsequent Ukrainian raids easier—at least until Russians can reorganize their air defense network.

A bet. Ukrainian planners hoping to confirm purported hit on MiG-31, where Russian navy’s Su-27s are strictly medium-range air-to-air fighters, bigger MiGs have long-range air-to-air role, firing powerful R-37 radar-guided missiles as far as 220 miles, the half-ton R-37 is “particularly difficult to evade,” according to Royal United Services Institute, & has reportedly shot down several Ukrainian warplanes.

The mere presence of R-37-armed MiG-31s in Crimea has compelled Ukrainian pilots to fly low in order to avoid detection. That limits how far Ukrainians can see with their own radars—and how far they can shoot with their own shorter-ranged missiles.

Every MiG-31 Russians lose makes the sky over Ukraine safer for Ukrainian pilots, so far, they’ve lost none in combat in Ukraine which anyone has confirmed. The Russian air force has just a hundred or so of the twin-engine, two-seat MiG-31s and takes pains to preserve them. In April, when it became apparent that Ukraine was getting ATACMS models capable of ranging nearly 200 miles, the Russians yanked four MiG-31s from Primorsko-Akhtarsk, in southern Russia 200 miles from the front—and relocated them to Privolzhsky, 500 miles away from front.

Since all of Crimea is in range of the farther-flying ATACMS. So if the Russians are going to fly around-the-clock air-defense patrols over Crimea with R-37-armed MiGs, it has few good options but to base at least a small number of MiGs on the peninsula—and risk the ATACMS too  Huat Arhh.

The mobilization law is in effect, is very fresh Ukrainian troops are undergoing training and new brigades are forming. Hoping to have 10 brigades.

The 67th Mechanized Brigade, after an official investigation confirmed allegations of deep incompetence in the brigade’s command staff.

Elements of the Ukrainian army’s 56th and 41st Mechanized Brigades and 5th Assault Brigade scrambled to fill the gap in the defensive line left by the dissolution of the 67th Mechanized Brigade. Kyiv rushed more drones to Chasiv Yar.

Good news, for friends of Ukraine, is that the Ukrainians seem to have won this race temp. The garrison in Chasiv Yar is now flush with ammo

Chasiv Yar, including reaching the canal and, in some instances, crossing it with small groups, the Russians have ultimately failed to establish a foothold on the other side and advance further,” Ukrainian analysis group Frontelligence Insight reported on Friday....By mid-May, the Ukrainians were much better-armed. So when that assault group tried to cross miles of open fields on Friday, it got hit the whole way—with 100-pound shells, 50-pound missiles and two-pound drones. The few Russians who reached the canal district didn’t last long.

The garrison in Chasiv Yar isn’t the only one benefiting from the influx of ammunition. “For the first time during the war, none of the brigades complained that there were no artillery shells,” Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky claimed on Thursday.

Zelensky might be overstating the abundance of ammo.(He talk & sing ahh)

it’s evident that, when the Russians attacked Chasiv Yar on Friday, the Ukrainians had plenty of firepower to hurl at them.
