Their things are priced too high, yet quality is only equal or slightly better than those from other countries. But if they set a lower price, they can't recoup their capital to even pay the high salary of the workers.
It's a difficult problem to solve. The only way is to keep coming up with very innovative products that other countries cannot produce. With a declining population this is very unlikely.

Yen dropped so that Japan can pay for USA lah. Else how USA get off the debt hook all these years? Japan has been the little bro since after WWII cos USA needs Asia bases to hold down China. Same story for South Korea lah...
After WWII, USA needs to ensure they have Asia influence and bases to contain and deter China. But now China playing same game back to USA. Instead of letting every country kena the usual imf and wb debt borrowing, China is lending to all countries the USD they required (to return to USA for the borrowed loans), with exception of Japan since they also hold lots of USD and debt...
Japan may well be a bright spot for investors to check out... But as long as Japan is a whipping boy for USA, very hard to return to glory days lah...

Export should normally rise if Yen is dropping. Whether the trend will continue is another question. Japanese export was badly hit. Every country will rise and will fall sometimes. It goes in a cycle.
