Malaysia now learnt party insiders growing influence of Rafizi in PKR, in advantage of both his position in the Cabinet & vacuum left by former deputy president Mohamad Azmin Ali, who once defeated him for number 2 post, is increasingly being viewed with caution by Anwar.

"Rafizi has increased his influence in the party, especially in Selangor, since the PKR split in 2020 following Azmin's sacking. It was therefore expected he would easily defeat Saifuddin Nasution in 2022 contest for deputy president.

"Ultimately, the only way up for Rafizi is to go after the presidency. That also means the end of the Anwar dynasty," the source told MalaysiaNow. It an open secret Anwar had tacitly supported Saifuddin - whom one senior party leader described as "a staunch acolyte" for party boss - in the race for deputy president two years ago.

Saifuddin, whose relationship with the PM dates back to their Umno days, played a key role in secret negotiations with Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to form a political alliance to ensured PKR leader could realise his ambitions to become PM after the 2022 general election.

But home minister, who lost his Kulim Bandar Baharu seat in last general election, has no clout within PKR, let alone Selangor PKR, a state whose support is essential for anyone vying for key top posts.

The source said there had been “frantic gestures from top” for Amirudin – who as MB has a better chance of winning support for himself in Selangor – to enter deputy president's race, making it even more difficult for Rafizi to defend the post. "So far, Amirudin resisted, he feels secure in his newfound alliance with Rafizi," it added.

"However, for his refusal, he is likely to pay a heavy price."

Meaningful gift’, says Najib’s wife Rosmah after court acquits her of 17 money laundering, tax evasion charges. Rosmah Mansor - who is the wife of former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak - has also filed an appeal against her conviction and sentence involving a hybrid solar project worth RM1.25 billion. Meaningful gift’, says Najib’s wife Rosmah after court acquits her of 17 money laundering, tax evasion charges.

KUALA LUMPUR: In the latest development of a legal battle spanning six years, the Malaysian High Court on Thursday (Dec 19) discharged and acquitted Rosmah Mansor - the wife of former prime minister Najib Razak - of 17 money laundering and tax evasion charges.

In 2018, Rosmah was charged with 12 charges of money laundering involving RM7.09 million (US$1.57 million) and five charges of failing to declare her income to the Inland Revenue Board (IRB).

Justice K Muniandy said that the charges against Rosmah were flawed as they did not comply with the provisions in the Criminal Procedure Code.

“The charges amounted to duplicity and multiplicity. Furthermore, they did not disclose any offence,” he was quoted as saying by local media on Dec 19.

Muniandy said he was using his original jurisdiction and inherent power as trial judge to give the accused an acquittal and discharge.

Following her acquittal, Rosmah appeared to breathe a sigh of relief as she faced the media scrum outside the court.

“My lawyers have assured me since day one that these charges had no basis but you can never be certain,” Rosmah was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times.

Rosmah, 73, regarded her acquittal during her birthday month as a gift not just for herself but also for her husband.

“My acquittal on my birthday (month) is not only a meaningful gift for me but also a gift for my Bossku (Najib),” she said, as quoted by the New Straits Times, referring to the moniker that supporters of Najib had used on the former premier.

KUALA LUMPUR – Rosmah Mansor has been acquitted by Malaysia’s High Court of 12 counts of money laundering involving RM7 million (S$2.1 million) and five counts of failing to declare her income to the Inland Revenue Board. Justice K. Muniandy issued the order of discharge and acquittal after granting Rosmah’s application to dismiss all charges on the basis that they were flawed. The case was partially heard with testimony from two witnesses.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers said on Dec 19 it will appeal against the decision. Rosmah said the acquittal came as a “meaningful gift” during her birthday month. She was unable to hold back her emotions as she expressed relief at closing this chapter after six years of legal battle.

“My acquittal on my birthday is only meaningful gift for me it also gift for my Bossku (Najib). This is what I call justice, she said, when met by press after proceedings ended.

SEREMBAN, Dec 22 — Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties must address disagreements internally and avoid making public statements, chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today at the opening of the coalition’s Negeri Sembilan convention.

Zahid, who is also Umno president, stressed that teamwork is vital for the coalition’s future success, The Star reported this evening. “The MCA and MIC have remained our most loyal friends and if any of us has a differing view, we can always discuss this internally rather than make public statements. “In Barisan, teamwork is of utmost importance if we wish to be dominant again,” he was quoted as saying.

Tour bus driver, travelling in same direction with 27 passengers aboard, was unable to avoid the tyre & hit it, causing him to lose control. Malaysia’s attorney-general’s office said all petitions for prisoners in Malaysia to serve their sentences under house arrest, including jailed former Prime Minister Najib Razak, must be submitted to the pardons board chaired by the country’s king.

Najib is serving a six-year jail sentence for corruption linked to the multibillion-dollar 1MDB scandal. The Court of Appeal is set to hear on Jan 6 a bid by Najib to overturn a lower court decision in July that struck out his request to confirm the existence of and execute a royal order entitling him to serve his sentence under house arrest.

In statement on Sat, attorney-general’s office under constitution king has power to grant pardons, postpone sentences, relieve punishments any offences, as well as commute, suspend or mitigate any punishments imposed by a court. “If any party wishes to propose that any prisoner, including Najib Razak, serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest, an application should be submitted for consideration by the pardons board chaired by the king, according to established legal procedures and channels,” the office said.
