I would like to give Senator Marcos the benefit of the doubt that her public disclosure was merely out of concern for the Republic. However, many others are now thinking that she did so to scare people and motivate them to pressure her brother to change course and back off from his current stance of involving the US and other allies in the issue.

As an aside, pro-China mouthpieces are having a field day in taking advantage of the news about the US Pentagon deliberately maligning the Chinese-made anti-Covid vaccine as another plank in delegitimizing the US in the eyes of the Philippines. It should be stressed that the Pentagon's action, if true, is condemnable. However, it should also be significant to consider that the scandal was uncovered by Reuters after interviewing more than two dozen current and former US officials, military contractors, social media analysts and academic researchers, something that can only happen in a democracy. And while it is proper to investigate this, it is distasteful to appropriate this to muddle the issue in the West Philippine Sea.

It is important to stress that all these foreign superpowers — the US, Russia and China — will continue to play their game. The main goal of the Philippines is to make sure that when they play their game we would not simply become helpless, powerless pawns being played. Certainly, we are mere pawns when we cower in fear just because monster Chinese ships are patrolling our waters or that Senator Marcos announced that Chinese hypersonic missiles are now aimed at us.

China talked to us as an equal last Tuesday. We should let that thought sink in our minds.
