The Wall Street Journal wrote that Mr. Trump has always promoted himself as a president who can avoid war, but this time his bluff is triggering a war that may kill thousands of Americans. Trump, who calls himself a China hawk, might as well talk about plans to prevent a crisis in the Taiwan Strait. (Source: NYT, New York Magazine, WSJ)

Trump said, "Taiwan is 9,500 miles away from us and only 68 miles away from China, and China is a large piece of land and they can just bomb it. They don't even have to -- I mean, they can just bomb it. Now they don't want to They do this because they don't want to lose those chip factories."

The New York Times pointed out that Taiwan has paid for almost all orders placed with U.S. military factories, and the Biden administration has further directly transferred part of the U.S. military inventory to Taiwan. Trump's view is that Taiwan owes the United States more in pursuing overall security.

Vance and other Republicans argue that China remains the United States' most pressing challenge in global affairs, and some say that protecting Taiwan should be the United States' top priority rather than defending Ukraine.

Today, "a greatly underestimated risk is that he appears to be encouraging China to invade Taiwan."
