OSLO, KOMPAS.com - Findings from animal rights groups NOAH and One Whale on Wednesday (4/9/2024) revealed that a Beluga whale named Hvaldimir, who was suspected of being a Russian spy, died from being shot. Hvaldimir was found dead off the coast of Risavika, southwest Norway, Saturday (31/8/2024) at 14.30 local time.
"There were multiple gunshot wounds all over his body," said One Whale chief Regina Crosby Haug, who saw Hvaldimir's body, as quoted by the AFP news agency .
Meanwhile, Marine Mind founder Sebastian Strand—who found Hvaldi dead—said the cause of his death was not yet known for certain. "We see scars, but it's too early to say what they are," he said.
Norway suspects Hvaldimir escaped from his cage, possibly trained by the Russian Navy because he appeared accustomed to human presence. However, the Kremlin has never issued any official statement on speculation that Hvaldimir could be a "Russian spy".
