Based on many studies, working our brain hard at our jobs could pay off in more ways than boosting our careers and helping us to accumulate more savings for eventual retirement. It may also protect our cognition and help prevent dementia as we age. Even though S'poreans are choosing to stay employed for longer owing to the high cost of living, fear of boredom and cognitive decline, cases of dementia are on the increase, and the onset seems to be at a younger age.

Based on anecdotal evidence, my mother who retired at 55 years of age, is mentally alert and physically strong in her 80s. I have 2 aunts who worked till their mid-60s, but are suffering from dementia. Another uncle, who ran his own GP clinic till 70, is unable to recognise people or speak much now in his mid-80s.

But the useless Govt is painting another picture
