"We are not superhuman.”
🙅‍♀️ Teachers will not be required to answer work-related messages outside of school hours, nor provide parents with their personal phone numbers.
MOE will also take firm action against parents who harass or abuse school staff, Education Minister Chan Chun Sing said.Â

I find it absurd that the Auditor-General’s Office considers free parking in our schools and junior colleges synonymous with supplying hidden perks and entitlements to staff. This latest move by the Ministry of Education in the name of a “clean wage” practice is an insult to all employees - especially dedicated teachers - of our educational institutions. The Public Service Division’s directive that employees’ salaries contain no hidden benefits has to cut both ways. This means that teachers, must no longer be encumbered with non-teaching duties and assignments outside school hours since MOE must not benefit from staff working beyond their teaching obligations and stipulated hours. If such responsibilities are deemed necessary, our teachers must be paid overtime or be granted off-in-lieu.Â

Our teachers are becoming so soft and uncaring nowadays.

My sister left the teaching profession after 10 years after a Singlish-speaking mother of her student blamed the teacher's "poor command of English" for her son's substandard language skills. Ironically, this is the same woman who told her son: "You eat yourself. I go press money" while they were at the hawker centre next door to that school. I was there for lunch with my sister before she threw in the towel on her teaching career. Â

It is common knowledge that teachers often bring work home to grade, carry out research and plan for the following day’s lessons, as well as respond to telephone calls, mobile phone messages or emails from parents. Does the Education Ministry compensate teachers for the phone and Internet charges incurred while working at home?

Schools may soon see an end to supplementary classes after official hours and especially school holidays, since this is tantamount to taking advantage of staff and schools must not be allowed to do so in the name of a “fair work” policy. The ultimate losers will be our own children.Â

MOE and the AG’s Office are either ignorant of the many sacrifices that teachers make, or are only concerned with effectuating policies to fulfill their own key performance indicators. It appears that little or no feedback was solicited from the parties most affected by this move.

As MOE becomes more calculative with its staff, teachers will probably start claiming for additional study materials that they produced during their own time, using their own resources. Perhaps teachers should also be compensated for their participation in Co-Curricular Activities which often entail leading students for practices, performances, community outreach initiatives, overseas trips etc.Â

Managers are not permitted to disturb subordinates after office hours in many other countries.

Unfortunately, our managers have learned all the wrong habits from our politicians about making use of others. Â
