MOSCOW (AFP) - Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev said on Friday (Dec 24) that Washington grew "arrogant and self-confident" after the collapse of the Soviet Union, leading to the expansion of the Nato military alliance.

......

"They grew arrogant and self-confident. They declared victory in the Cold War," Mr Gorbachev, 90, said.

He insisted that it was "together" that Moscow and Washington pulled the world out of confrontation and the nuclear race.

Mikhail Gorbachev is a useless leader!
Respect this guy.
He put himself at risk to make changes.
In the end the Union was unsustainable and collapsed.

Estonia, Poland are now bright stars in Europe were all part of the Eastern bloc.

It was not a great nation but a big nation under revolving dictators.

Stalin  was a butcher who killed many of his own people

The Soviet Union used its power to suppress Hungary killing many. Hungary today as a democracy works well.

Soviet Union kept Germany separate by supporting a dictator  in E. Germany....the people hang him once he was toppled.
Gorbachev was a weak leader, but what he said about Nato is true. Nato should not have tried to expand eastwards. Likewise the EU. Only led to destabilisation and the inclusion of some right wing countries such as Hungary and Turkey. You can't expect Putin not to react when a former adversary is expanding up to your own fence.
