Many shoplifters steal not because they cannot afford the goods, but for other reasons such as the thrill or excitement it provides, an obsessive-compulsive disorder or believe they are above the law. In my humble opinion, shoplifters usually do so because they desire a particular product, but believe that the asking price is excessive, unreasonable or beyond what they are willing to pay. They are motivated to steal out of a sense of entitlement.
A male lawyer stole eyeliners and a chocolate bar worth $17.40 in total from John Little in Plaza Singapura in 2017.

A theft occurred of a soon-to-be-discontinued Labubu doll from a shop at Plaza Singapura by a young woman was discovered by the shop owner who noticed a missing box while stock taking. While checking the CCTV footage, he saw a female teenager taking a box of Labubu from the shelf around that afternoon and walking around the store for a while before exiting without paying.

A sense of entitlement refers to a belief that a person is deserving of something without effort. A shoplifter believes that she has a right to have that Labubu doll for example, but feels that it is overpriced, so she sees nothing wrong in stealing it.
When I was a student, I heard tales from classmates who worked part-time in stores, about how they collaborated with friends, who pretended to be customers, in order to shoplift goods from those stores.
