Defence chief is not a military strategic role, it is more of an administrative and management role, dealing with budgets etc, otherwise it would have been Ah Chan and Ah Tan in the Mindef minister role.

Instead, it’s a specialist medical doctor that has been heading Mindef for years.

It’s the Generals who are handling the detailed military work.

Aiyah SME mentality all like that one, they think to manage a department, must have studied the exact topic in university or have experience.

The CEOs of many huge MNC oil and gas companies, banks, etc are legally trained, they are lawyers first and foremost, and had taken MBA. But SME mentality like yours will say oh to be CEO of O&G company MUST BE ENGINEER! To be CEO of bank MUST BE FINANCE EXPERT!

You people have no clue how to manage a real MNC lah. For C-suite, overall vision, strategy and overview of the entire company is more important than the detailed nitty gritty. You have other senior management for that.

In Spore is different, we have a lot of ministers who are doctors and our trade minister is an engineer Will it be better to let doctor be Health Minister and Army General be Minister of Defence?

SME mentality.

Since you have access to internet, go and look up the CEOs of all the Fortune 500 MNCs, look at their CV, compare it to their company’s main business operations, and let me know if you still think specific technical education and lots of experience is required for their CEO roles.
Quote:Musk later transferred to the University of Pennsylvania and received bachelor's degrees in economics and physics. He moved to California in 1995 to attend Stanford University but never enrolled in classes, and with his brother Kimbal co-founded the online city guide software company Zip2. The startup was acquired by Compaq for $307 million in 1999.

That same year, Musk co-founded X.com, a direct bank. X.com merged with Confinity in 2000 to form PayPal. In 2002, Musk acquired US citizenship, and that October eBay acquired PayPal for $1.5 billion. Using $100 million of the money he made from the sale of PayPal, Musk founded SpaceX, a spaceflight services company, in 2002.

In 2004, Musk was an early investor in electric-vehicle manufacturer Tesla Motors, Inc. (later Tesla, Inc.), providing most of the initial financing and assuming the position of the company's chairman. He later became the product architect and, in 2008, the CEO. In 2006, Musk helped create SolarCity, a solar energy company that was acquired by Tesla in 2016 and became Tesla Energy. In 2013, he proposed a hyperloop high-speed vactrain transportation system. In 2015, he co-founded OpenAI, a nonprofit artificial intelligence research company. The following year Musk co-founded Neuralink, a neurotechnology company developing brain–computer interfaces, and The Boring Company, a tunnel construction company. In 2018 the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) sued Musk, alleging that he had falsely announced that he had secured funding for a private takeover of Tesla. To settle the case Musk stepped down as the chairman of Tesla and paid a $20 million fine. In 2022, he acquired Twitter for $44 billion, merged the company into the newly-created X Corp. and rebranded the service as X the following year. In March 2023, Musk founded xAI, an artificial-intelligence company.

In your SME mentality opinion, Elon Musk shouldn’t have done all that because all he had was a bachelor degree in physics and economics. 🙄
You think the U.S. is like Singapore where the country is run like a corporation? Typical Singapore mindset.

Running a country is not like running a company, big countries like the U.S., China and Russia do appoint talents to a role based on their relevant experience.

The current Defence Secretary of the U.S. is not a Tom, Dick and Harry. Please read his profile below:

“A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., Austin served 41 years in uniform, retiring as a four-star Army general after three years as commander of U.S. Central Command.

Mr. Austin was awarded the Silver Star for his leadership of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division during the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Seven years later, he would assume the duties of Commanding General of United States Forces – Iraq, overseeing all combat operations in the country.

Austin holds the unique distinction of having commanded in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan at the one-, two-, three- and four-star levels, and was the first African American to command a division, corps, and field army in combat.”

Trump is a businessman, that is why he tends to appoint his friends for key roles.

He even allows Elon Musk who holds no role in the cabinet to act like a shadow Vice President…which is not right. Elon may take advantage of his power to benefit his own business and interests, grab more money, that is where deep corruption starts.
