Christmas in Damascus is different this year, after al-Assad’s fall. The ancient Old City comes alive with lights, music and joy, Syrians talk about their their hopes now al-Assad is gone.
Damascus, Syria – There’s something different Christmas this year, Damascenes say.
Although the decorations may have been more elaborate last year, Carol al-Sahhaf says this year’s festive mood is a cut above, less than two weeks after Bashar al-Assad fled and his regime crumbled.
On either side of the biblical Street Called Straight – or al-Mustaqeem or just Straight Street for short – lights and Christmas trees adorn the cafes, restaurants, shops and homes of Bab Sharqi, the neighbourhood nestled up to the Eastern Gate of the ancient Old City.
The alleyways around Straight Street are bustling, with a spring-like feeling in the air as shopkeepers repaint, dust off their shelves, and hang the green, white and black Free Syria flag.
Lights, cookies, and optimism
Al-Assad fled on December 8, and the country erupted into jubilation that lasted for days as Syrians celebrated the fall of the al-Assad family and the end of more than 50 years of brutal rule.
As those celebrations calmed, Olga al-Muuti told Al Jazeera, everyone turned to preparing for Christmas, New Year’s and Orthodox Christmas.

U.S. delegation arrives in Syrian capital for first meetings since Assad's fall. The delegation is expected to meet with members of the Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham rebel group, said a State Department spokesperson.
WASHINGTON — Senior U.S. officials arrived in Damascus on Friday for the first diplomatic mission to the Syrian capital since the fall of dictator Bashar al-Assad this month.
The U.S. delegation, led by Barbara Leaf, the senior State Department official for the Middle East, is expected to meet with members of the Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS) rebel group, according to a State Department spokesperson. The group is acting as the de facto govt in Syria.
Those discussions are expected to focus on expectations for a transition to an inclusive Syrian government and the “hope to uncover information about fate of Austin Tice, Majd Kamalmaz & other American citizens who disappeared under Assad regime,” spokesperson said in a statement.
Roger Carstens, special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, who traveled to Damascus in 2020 for secret negotiations about Tice during the first Trump administration, is also a part of the delegation.
In addition to HTS, diplomats will meet with members of civil society, activists, members of different communities & other Syrians “about their vision for future of their country and how the US can help support them,” spokesperson said.
Daniel Rubinstein, a senior adviser for State Dept’s Middle East bureau, will lead dept’s diplomatic engagement on Syria, according to spokesperson, will “engage directly with Syrian people & key parties in Syria coordinate with allies & partners.”
Since Assad's ouster, Biden admin has come under increasing pressure to put U.S. personnel on ground to participate in the search for Tice, who was abducted in Syria 12 years ago. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Thursday, US was in touch with “every possible actor who might be able to get info, involves anyone & everyone who has some relationship with different rising authorities in Syria.”

In Damascus meeting, US drops reward for arrest of Syria's new leader.
DAMASCUS: A senior US diplomat told Syria's new leader Ahmed al-Sharaa on Friday (Dec 20) that Washington was scrapping a reward for his arrest, and welcomed "positive messages" from their talks including a promise to fight terrorism.
Barbara Leaf, Washington's top diplomat for the Middle East, made the comments after her meeting with Sharaa in Damascus - the first formal mission to Syria's capital by United States diplomats since the early days of Syria's civil war.
The lightning offensive that toppled President Bashar al-Assad on December 8 was led by the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which is rooted in Al-Qaeda's Syria branch but has sought to moderate its image in recent years. Leaf's meeting with HTS chief Sharaa came despite Washington's designation of his group as a terrorist organisation.
"Based on our discussion, I told him we would not be pursuing the Rewards for Justice reward offer that has been in effect for some years," Leaf told reporters after their talks. She said "we welcomed positive messages" from Sharaa. "We will be looking for progress on these principles and actions, not just words," she said.
"I also communicated the importance of inclusion and broad consultation during this time of transition," she said. "We fully support a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political process that results in an inclusive and representative government which respects the rights of all Syrians, including women, and Syria's diverse ethnic and religious communities."

SETS the STANDARD FOR Ankara to sees SDF as an affiliate of its sworn enemy, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, which it classifies as a terrorist organization. Turkish-backed armed groups alongside Turkish jets for years have attacked positions where the SDF are largely present across northern Syria, in a bid to create a buffer zone free from the group along the large shared border. While the SNA was involved in the lightning insurgency — led by Islamic group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham to toppled Assad, it has continued its push against the SDF, seen as Syria’s second key actor for its political future.
On Monday. SDF spokesperson Farhad Shami said its forces pushed back Turkish-backed rebels from areas near the Tishrin Dam on the Euphrates River, a key source of hydroelectric power. He said SDF also destroyed a tank belonging to rebels southeast of Manbij.
