Military service is mandatory in Israel, but under agreements forged at Israel’s creation, when the Haredim were only a very small community, those who devote themselves to the study of sacred Jewish texts can avoid conscription.

The ultra-Orthodox account for 14 percent of Israel’s Jewish population, according to the Israel Democracy Institute (IDI), representing about 1.3 million people. About 66,000 of those of conscription age are exempted, according to the army.

It has to do with survival. Israel faces security threats from many groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah and other terrorist organisations. This makes it necessary to have a large and well-trained armed forces. A relatively small population, makes conscription necessary to maintain a larger military force than possible with a purely full-time army. Look at the historical context of the Holocaust; it is not the direct cause of conscription, but a lesson that Jews will be vulnerable unless they equip themselves to defend their homeland.
Hamas started a war with Israel, and are now crying father and mother after being defeated. It is the Palestinian civilians that I empathise with. Hamas brought misery and death to them by killing Israeli civilians on 7 Oct 2023.
