According to Yonhap News, President Trump wrote on his social media platform, TruthSocial, that morning, "I will be calling our great United States Ice Hockey Team this morning to encourage them to win tonight's game against Canada." He added, "One day, perhaps soon, Canada will be our precious and very important 51st state with much lower taxes and much stronger security."
"I regrettably cannot attend (the final) as I am scheduled to speak at the Republican Governors Association conference tonight in Washington, D.C.," Trump said.
In particular, he said, "But we will all be watching, and if Premier Trudeau wants to come (to the Governors' Association meeting), he would be most welcome."
White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt also emphasized that "President Trump will be watching the United States win tonight," adding that "he is looking forward to the game tonight, and we are looking forward to beating Canada, which will soon be our 51st state."
