The policy prevents the NSF, one of the world’s biggest supporters of basic research, from awarding new research grants and from supplying allotted funds for existing grants, such as those that receive yearly increments of money.
In the past two weeks, the NSF has terminated roughly 1,040 grants that would have awarded US$739 million to researchers and their institutions.

NSF staff expect hundreds more grants to be terminated Friday.
I was reading through the replies and had the same concerns about how this affects future research opportunities. While looking into alternate ways researchers and students cope with funding cuts, I came across https://latteperday.com/ which offers some interesting tips and tools to stretch limited resources. It's not a fix for the big picture, but it gave me a few practical ideas on managing tighter budgets without losing momentum.
Graduate students who rely on the fundings as their only source of income would hv to stop their studies and look for jobs elsewhere. Profs without their students' input will not be able to publish and secure future fundings.
