KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian badminton ace Lee Zii Jia, ranked seventh in the world, was Friday (Jan 21) banned from tournaments for two years as a punishment for quitting his national team to go independent.

......

Following some poor performances in recent months, including at the Olympics, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) disclosed this week he had quit the body and wanted to play as an independent.

But the association refused to back the move, instead deciding to punish him with a two-year ban from all tournaments sanctioned by world governing body the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

BWF sanctions the vast majority of tournaments on the badminton calendar, and each country's association is responsible for registering its players - meaning the Malaysian body can effectively block Lee from competing.

......

Lee, previously seen as one of Malaysia's best hopes of winning the country's first ever Olympic gold medal, has yet to comment publicly since news emerged he was cutting ties with BAM.

World number one Viktor Axelsen of Denmark earlier this week voiced support for Lee's decision to go independent, tweeting that "it's his career and his life after all".

Brother Sotong, hope you are not living in northern areas. Laughing
He play too much Instagram and social media and try be influencer. That is why.
Why can't a sportsman pursue sports independently using his own money? Malaysia is very vindictive to ban him from basically all tournaments. This only proves that LKY was right to leave Malaysia.

This is the first time I hear of a person who wants to play independently.....not for a country, which is the norm.....
How come can suka suka ban him?

Been an issue for quite some time. Badminton is different from tennis. In badminton, the national associations are the ones that register the players into tournaments. In tennis, it is the players themselves that do the registering. Because of this, it is very difficult to find doubles teams with players of different nationalities.

There are pros and cons. The pros of badminton are that a lot of costs (traveling, accommodation, training, diet, etc) are borne by the association especially when the player is new. But for the best players, it is best to go independent as the sponsorships, etc will all go directly to the players. The players can also choose the tournaments they want to go to and the equipment/attire that they want to use/wear.
I heard he joined a private badminton association for  a million dollar contract. He joined the meimei female mixed double player who recently quit but joined this association.

Better financial rewards, rather than being squeezed due to budget cut esp for sports that have many non bummi atheletes.

That is why they insist to ban them for two years

This ban is useless, TCSS only. You play as a private, not a national player.

He can migrate to Singapore. We welcome talent like him.
Rewards is one thing, but I think the poor support from BAM is the main issue. LZJ keeps getting injured and he's always forfeiting matches. Why? The physio/doctor provided is substandard?

Sg give zero dollars to world champion. In malaisai, the rewards from private companies is so much better.

LZJ himself is substandard.

Technically, they are not banning him. Just not registering him for tournaments, which is as good as a ban.

His only choice left is to migrate. This way he will be under another badminton association that might be willing to let him be independent or willing to let him have his own trainers, schedule etc.

He won the All-England. This is one of the three top-prizes in badminton, together with the World Championship and Olympics. Equivalent of a Grand Slam in tennis.

He can register as a private individual player and not represent a cuntry for Open badminton tournament. Like tennis world tournament, they represent themselves rather than the cuntries.

Just like Assmerican boycott the winter Olympic and wont sent atheletes there but the Assmerican atheletes can still participate privately and represent himself/herself.

Become substandard after that. That is why he felt pressured by BAM.

In badminton, he cannot register for tournaments directly with BWF. He has to go via his country's badminton association as that is the rule of BWF. Tennis is the opposite of badminton in terms of the registration rules.

Sg give money when the player win medals for the country e.g Olympics, Asian games and SEA games. Those world championships are more of personal win for the sports player themselves.
It’s an open secret. If you are a Bumi and you are a national player, in any sports, you treated differently. You get all the perks that the “ others” may or will not get. This inequality is there to see. If you are a”others”, in work, in sports, in life, you have to strike on your own. This is an example
In study university also the same lah
My maid also want to be LJZ. She wants to plan her own work schedules.
Please don't come to Singapore.
