Expect similar increase when GST increase to 9%..
Consumer to be blame as well coz in the past, we endorsed sellers of good or services to increase price at 50c or $1 interval. If back then such shops or hawkers are being boycotted the moment price is raised in this manner, we would only see smaller interval increase now.
Later when GST star they increase another dollar

Because 50cent is easier to calculate for them if someone buy 3 packet or 4 packets amd easier to change coins and also end of days easier to calculate their massive profits.. nothing to do with Material costs. They just follow trend. They will look stupid amd feel shortchange if they didnt increase price.
Luckily the stall I bought from started at $1.50 and $2 last time. Now is $2, $2.50.
My chicken feet noodle stall increase from $3 to $3.50 after CNY.

The food centre price system is getting out of sync.
Now just up to the hawkers to up prices as and when they wish.
Those stalls with low and cheap ingredients are seizing the chance to jack up 50c or $1 to maximise their profits gleefully. And the price increases are permanent henceforth.
The authorities have to intervene immediately to prevent further damage. They have to make some strong comments so those "hawks" will think twice when they want to increase their prices.

Forums are a good way to rally people to push back.
It's supply and demand.
If you stop patronisiing, and enough people stop patronisiing, hawkers will understand that customers are not fools, and that their stall is not indispensable.
But if you keep on going back, then I don't want to see any more thread about this.

What to intervene
pap says boycott that stall that is the sop overpaid mayors are doing noting to help.
boycott the stall and the gov. they ask for it.
