In a speech, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the country's citizens to take up arms. 

"We give weapons to everyone who is able to protect us," he said in Kiev on Thursday. Veterans are also invited. 

"Everyone who has combat experience and wants to protect Ukraine should come forward." The Ukrainians should donate blood for the wounded in the hospitals: "Please donate blood for our fighters," Zelenskyj said.

More than 40 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed, according to an adviser to the Ukrainian Presidential Office. Several dozen were injured accordingly. There are also civilian casualties.
