Russia has announced ceasefires in Kyiv and three other cities so that the population can get to safety. At the weekend, however, two evacuation attempts failed in Mariupol due to sustained shelling.In four Ukrainian cities, fighting is apparently to be suspended for a few hours to enable the people living there to flee.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced ceasefires in the capital Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mariupol and the eastern Ukrainian city of Sumy.According to the Russian military, all ceasefires should come into force from 8 a.m. Central European Time, as reported by the Russian news agency Interfax.
During this time, residents should be able to leave the embattled cities via humanitarian corridors. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, residents should be able to go to other cities in Ukraine or leave Ukraine for Russia and Belarus.
Russia publishes escape routes
The Russian military published several escape routes that should lead out of the four cities. For example, people from Kyiv should first be driven to Gomel in Belarus and then flown to Russia from there.
From Mariupol, civilians were to be taken to the southern Russian city of Rostov.
Refugees from Sumy should therefore find temporary accommodation in the central Ukrainian city of Poltava.
According to Russia, it has informed international aid organizations. The news agencies quote the Russian coordination staff as saying that the evacuation will be monitored with combat drones. The agreement on the ceasefire has not yet been confirmed by the Ukrainian side.
