Veteran Republican strategist Karl Rove first reported in the Wall Street Journal that Cawthorn made the comments to a group of supporters in Asheville, North Carolina, last weekend.
WRAL, a CNN-affiliate television station in Raleigh, then published a video of Cawthorn making them.
