Weiwei: We are witnessing a brutal war of aggression. Residential areas in Ukraine are being bombed, and many are fleeing to neighboring countries. Russia's actions are unacceptable and shock us. Western nations have believed that this is not possible in Europe and only happens elsewhere, such as in the Middle East. Now it's happening a few hundred kilometers away.
There is so much talk in the West about freedom of the press and freedom of information, but look at the situation of Julian Assange: if he were extradited to the US, he would face very serious consequences. The West is hypocritical, as this case shows quite clearly.
Weiwei: Just open a newspaper and see how little space is given to discrimination. Or how little the US disaster in Afghanistan was discussed. One week's coverage of Ukraine surpasses 30 years' coverage of Afghanistan. Why is nobody talking about the war in Yemen? Does human life have different values? We all know about these conflicts, but we don't care.
Many Ukrainians are forced to leave their homes and need help. I'm not surprised at the European aid, but I am amazed that other refugees, whether because of their origin or the color of their skin, are denied aid.
