A TROUBLING TREND

Similar to what was highlighted by couples CNA spoke to, Assoc Prof Tan echoed that the cost of living and work-life balance are the most pressing issues that current government policies have yet to resolve.

“But more importantly, we need to prioritise child-rearing, and employers should rethink the way they evaluate the contribution of their staff members," he said.

Dr Tan Poh Lin, an assistant professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy under NUS, said it was “quite troubling” to see the trend of more women remaining childless.

She explained that the motivations for having a first child are “generally understood” to be different from those for having subsequent children.

For instance, having a first child could stem from desires to experience parenthood, while having more kids could be to provide siblings, or have children of both genders.

The problem is that the first set of motivations “tends to be more intrinsic and less amenable to changes in circumstances, including policy initiatives”, she said

“What may be easier to tackle is to introduce more of a focus on encouraging earlier childbearing, to forestall cases of involuntary childlessness that result from delaying childbearing,” she added.

I think the govt has already solved this problem.

There is enough people from Vietnam India and China applying to come and for scholarship so we don't have to worry this will affect our economy.
The is a growing and serious problem in Singapore and it is getting worse and worse.
.
The main factors is higher stress, rising cost of living and rising poverty. One factor is job security. Increasingly singaporeans have to worry about this, the way workers are appraised performance managed to squeeze them ....all adds to "anxiety" and stress to drive down fertility.

Singapore has lowest feetlity rate in the world.
It is driven by extreme factors and a vicious cycle created by PAP policies.

PAP will use falling fertility to justify more labor imports which causes stress (now euphemistically called anxiety is our national day rally").

Low fertility means our local singaporean sociey will just shrink and diminish...which defeats the whole purpose of everything else.

The PAP is just making everythibg worse ...
Their economic policies is in conflict .

Just like JoTeo driving CPF minimum threshold is also in conflict with her job.

Not forgetting, MOE also propagate unsound agenda.

The whole PAP is a shit mess.

Imported PR and new citizens are not the same as Singapore born and bred citizens.
