Volkswagen AG's dramatic move to oust its combative chief executive officer was set in motion a week ago, when his backing from the billionaire Porsche and Piech family began to crumble.

Unwavering support from the reclusive clan that majority-owns VW had helped Mr Herbert Diess survive frequent clashes with powerful worker representatives. But as key project failures combined with worker discontent, the family concluded that he had to go.

The decisive day was July 20, according to people familiar with the deliberations. The top committee of VW's supervisory board, comprising family representatives, officials from the German state of Lower Saxony and labour leaders, determined that Mr Diess' time as CEO was up.

He learnt this around lunchtime the next day, still jet-lagged from a visit to the automaker's sport utility vehicle factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Why Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess Was Forced Out

Major software delays and rumored personal issues led to Diess's downfall at VW.

Bloomberg suggests Diess was removed after severe software-development delays and setbacks disrupted the scheduled launches of a handful of new Porsches, Bentleys and Audis. Adding insult to injury, buggy software is what originally delayed the Volkswagen ID range of electric cars.

Diess also was not exactly beloved among Volkswagen brass, mostly due to his rather tough leadership style. As Bloomberg reports:

In his push to transform the company into an electric-vehicle leader, he repeatedly clashed with labor leaders by warning VW was losing out to Tesla and needed to cut thousands of jobs. But failures at the carmaker’s software unit Cariad ultimately eroded Diess’s support from the powerful Porsche and Piech family that calls the shots.

Back in December, VW overhauled its management board, stripping Diess of some responsibilities while tasking him to turn around Cariad. While there’s been a lot of re-arranging since then, Diess didn’t manage to make the issues go away.....
