I hated this type of surname granting as it is a factor that reduces the number of people from other surnames and left China with only around 3,500 surnames nowadays from a total of about 22,000. However, it is a cheap way for the emperor to 'reward' people.

Do you know Ang Moh(红毛) has the complete opposite?
They have more surnames but limited names.
This is why many Ang Mohs have the same name.
If you call out their name like David, some of them will turn their heads to look around.
