January 1 is the 312th day of Russia's war against Ukraine. The invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022. 

It is an escalation of the war that has been going on since 2014. 

It was preceded by a Russian demand to rule out the possibility of further NATO enlargement and the reduction of the alliance's military potential in Central and Eastern Europe to its pre-1997 state.

How the War started ? 

Well, I recommend SGtalk folks to watch this Dec 2021 press conference when a UK reporter asked him about "security concern" and what the West does not understand about Russia.  The usually composed Putin replied in almost angry manner sharing Russian's core concerns.

That was a clear warning sign he had run out of patience with the West...

If Russia is concerned about NATO then it should attack NATO...not it's poor little neighbor.
