FYI Pinky remains the fastest-promoting and youngest BG in SAF history. His father got him to deliberately delayed his uni education so he could be eligible for the first batch of SAF Scholarship. When he retired in 1984 and entered politics, his first role was Minister of Defence. Bear in mind his father was still PM at the time. Father-son controlled the political and military machinery directly in their family for 5 years until Pinky left his MINDEF portfolio in 1990. Pinky was also the main guy who introduced the habit of plucking scholar officers out from the SAF to serve in the civil service as his subordinates.

I saw many years ago, that LHL when he was a officer in the SAF, went for lunch at a coffee shop at Pasir Panjang Road, with a group of SAF officers, I suspect that he is being watched over by a major in the SAF...........
