TURKEY MOVE 3 METERS

Carlo Doglioni, head of the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), spoke to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera about the earthquake. Stating that they think that the Anatolian plate, where the fault line is located, moved at least three meters in the northeast-southwest direction compared to the Arabian plate, the Italian scientist drew attention to the fact that this movement took place in only 30-40 seconds.

Underlining that seismic activity has been very high in the region throughout history, the Italian scientist said, "It's as if Turkey has moved."

SINGAPORE: It was past 4am in the Turkish city of Sanliurfa when Singaporean Tajjlee Rahim and his sister were awoken by what they thought was a snowstorm.

There had been a forecast for heavy snow on Monday (Feb 6) but when the tremors continued, Mr Tajjlee knew something was wrong.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake had struck central Türkiye in the darkness of a winter morning, the worst to hit the country this century. The epicentre was near the city of Gaziantep, about 130km away from Sanliurfa. Mr Tajjlee, who was on holiday in Türkiye, told CNA.

More than 4,300 people in Türkiye and neighbouring Syria have been killed.

The quake, one of the strongest to hit the region in more than 100 years, struck 23 kilometers (14.2 miles) east of Nurdagi, in Turkey's Gaziantep province, at a depth of 24.1 kilometers (14.9 miles), the United States Geological Survey said.

(CNN)Nearly 8,000 people have been reported killed and tens of thousands of others injured by the devastating earthquake that rocked Turkey and Syria on Monday.

Thousands of buildings collapsed in the two nations and aid agencies are warning of "catastrophic" repercussions in northwest Syria, where millions of vulnerable and displaced people were already relying on humanitarian support.

A series of aftershocks reverberated through the region in the immediate hours after the initial incident. A magnitude 6.7 aftershock followed 11 minutes after the first quake hit, but the largest temblor, which measured 7.5 in magnitude, struck about nine hours later at 1:24 p.m., according to the USGS.

That 7.5 magnitude aftershock, which struck around 95 kilometers (59 miles) north of the initial quake, is the strongest of more than 100 aftershocks that have been recorded so far.

Rescuers are now racing against time and the elements to pull survivors out from under debris on both sides of the border. More than 5,700 buildings in Turkey have collapsed, according to the country's disaster agency.

Monday's quake was also one of the strongest that Turkey has experienced in the last century -- a 7.8 magnitude quake hit the east of the country in 1939, which resulted in more than 30,000 deaths, according to the USGS.

Got people so stupid still sleep in a building there?

My ex gf from Chengdu slept on the Riverside for almost 2 months after the Sichuan earthquake. After that even the slightest noise at night she will jump out of bed and run out the house.

This is not the first time, in 1939 40k people were killed there in a similar type of quake. After that they built many anti-quake buildings, but many of them still collapsed as the shake is too long (lasted 5 mins) and too violent (up & down and left & right).

Run out of building for dear life is correct.

The earthquake started at 4am while everyone was asleep. Those at lower floor  could have been killed instantly when the ceilings collapse & they are trapped multiple layers underneath and those on the top floor may have survived and could be easily rescued as they are trapped on the top layer of rubbles. So far 8000 people have been pulled out of rubbles.
